Aquatics Championships Visit

We were delighted to be able to take 30 pupils to the The European Aquatics Championships today. Held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, Great Britain, they are not only one of the biggest sports events this spring but a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

During the evenet, there are three disciplines: swimming, diving and synchronised swimming. All of these will take place in the former complex of the 2012 Olympic Games.

I've been working really hard on my swimming every week at school. To see these amazing athletes compete was brilliant. They were so fast and powerful.

Prior to this year’s absolute highlight in August, these Championships serve as a last test event for part of the European aquatic elite. Amazingly it is the first time since Sheffield/Leeds in 1993, that the European Aquatics Championships have returned to Great Britain. The capital London played host to Europeans only once – in 1938.

My favourite part was seeing all the different countries. Martin could cheer for Poland, I could support Team GB and Simona could shout encouragement at the Lithuanian swimmers.

The Championships are the biggest event to be held at the London Aquatics Centre since the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The iconic London Aquatics Centre will open its doors to almost 1,000 athletes in synchronised swimming, diving and swimming.

To be able to have our pupils see such a significant sporting event is a fantastic opportunity. Having this Olympic quality facility on our doorstep is a real privilege and we try to make the most of what it offers. Our pupils were mesmerised by the performances, the speed of the swimmers and the whole sense of occasion. It certainly made a few memories that will last a lifetime and hopefully inspire them to try even harder in the pool

100% of the pupils who came to the event had never seen a live swim meet like this before.

70% of the group, had never been to the Olympic Pool before.

100% strongly agreed that seeing the competitive swimming has inspired them to try harder with their own swimming lessons.
