Half Term Activities

Not sure what to do over the half term break. There is lots going on to choose from!
 
 

Essex Wildlife Trust - Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre
At Hornchurch Country Park

·         Please note the majority of our events require advance booking and payment to secure a place unless otherwise stated. 
·         Most of our events take place outside so please come prepared for the days weather with suitable clothing and footwear to stay safe and comfortable. 
·         Children must be accompanied by an adult on all events unless otherwise stated.
 
 
HALF TERM SCHOOL HOLIDAYS – Join us for The Wildlife Trusts ‘Wild About Gardens Week’.
Hedgehog Box Building - Monday 24th October -  2-4pm
Bring the family along to build your very own hedgehog box to take back to your garden to encourage hedgehogs or donate your box to be used at local hedgehog release sites.   All materials and expertise will be provided.  £12 donation per box.  Places are limited. Age guide 5 years+ Booking essential.
 
Kite Making and Flying – Wednesday 26th October – 10 am – 12noon -  Following a very successful event last month come and construct, decorate and fly your very own kite which you can use again and again.  Mick the park ranger will guide you through step by step and then you can test your kite out in the park. £6 donation per kite.  Age guide 4+ yrs. Booking essential.
 
Repurpose your Rubbish for Wildlife! - Wednesday 26th October -2-4pm
To celebrate ‘Sustainability Day’ why not bring some of your household recyclables to the centre to see how you can transform them into Wildlife friendly items. Ideal items include jam jars, milk bottles and tin cans – please bring them already clean. There will be items for you to transform here at the centre if you can’t bring your own.  4 years +, £6 per child. Booking essential.
 
Merlins Bird Watching Club for Young People – Thursday 27th October - 10.30 am – 12.30pm 
Named after the Merlin engines that once powered RAF Hornchurch’s Spitfires.  Armed with binoculars, bird guide and notepad (all provided) join Brenda our birdwatching guide to spot, observe and identify the bird life of Hornchurch Country Park.  Suitable for 8 year olds + (unaccompanied).  Opportunity to learn and develop new skills session by session. The first Saturday of the month and then every Thursday in the school holidays. £6 donation per child sibling £4.
 
Wildlife SOS – Thursday 27th October – 2-4pm
Come and be a wildlife rescuer and help the park’s animals.  There will be lots of cuddly animals in need of your help; badgers, rabbits, hedgehogs, birds and much more.  Check over your animal to find out what is wrong then do your best to help them return to the wild.  Wildlife rescue equipment will be provided.  Come in your medical outfits if you wish.  This is an outdoor event.  £6 donation per child. Age guide 3 years +. Advance booking essential.
 
Metropolitan Police Safer Transport Team – Bike Marking and Travel Advice. Friday 28th October - 10 am – 1pm
Free event outside the visitor centre. No need to book just come along to have your bike security marked.
 
Wild About Gardens - Friday 28th October – 2-4pm
Discover how to make your garden, balcony or window ledge wonderful for wildlife. Make seed bombs to take home with you and create a spotters sheet especially for your garden.  4 years +, £6 per child per child.  Advance booking essential.
 
Halloween Hullabaloo - Saturday 29h October 3.30 – 5.30pm
Follow a spooky trail around the park in your best Halloween outfits and visit all the various activity stations along the way.  Make a lantern to see your way in the dark, a magic potion, listen to scary stories, and take part in horrid games.  Age guide 4 years +.  £6 donation per child.  Advance booking essential.
 
Halloween Ghost Walk – Saturday 29th October 7-9pm
Be guided on a walk around the park in search of the ghosts of this former wartime airfield.  Listen to the haunting tales of the past and who knows what you might see, hear and feel in the depths of the park! Age guide 10 years +
Advance booking essential. £6 per person.
