OPAL: Our play project - We have a canoe!

OPAL - Outdoor Play and Learning

Playing outdoors in rich play environments is one of the best ways for children to develop social skills, build resilience, make more friends, be more creative and care more about the planet. Right now, this is more important than ever.

The children are really enjoying our playground project and have been fully involved in the resources they want outside.

The children were thrilled this week to see the arrival of a canoe! What will it be? For this term, the canoe is going to be transformed into a peaceful, relaxing reading area.

Have a look at the photos below to see how the children are already using the canoe.

Would would like to say a huge thank you to Jasmine and her Mum, in Year 1 who kindly managed to get the canoe delivered for us. We are very lucky as the canoe was donated.

As mentioned in the OPAL letter sent out at the launch of the programme, we will be continuing collecting resources for children to play with as we need an endless supply. So, do think of us if you are having a clear out. The items we are looking for will enable us to enjoy a wider range of play experiences during playtime (see below for some examples):

  • Bread crates
  • Cable drums
  • Metal/plastic pots and pans
  • Range of plastic utensils.
  • Guttering
  • Dressing up clothes
  • Blankets (to add to our den building)
  • Small World toys (Dinosaurs, cars etc..)
  • Scooters
  • Deck chairs/ camping chairs (all sizes)
  • Outdoor cushions

Please put any donations on the grassed areas by the gate entrances. Mrs Stanley will then collect daily.

Why have a reading competition?
At Broadford we believe in developing a culture where children are intrinsically motivated to read for pleasure. We believe in encouraging them to read both inside and beyond school. We believe that the most effective way to promote reading is to work in partnership with parents and families.

How does it work?
During the holidays, parents and family look out for chances to 'catch their child reading'. This can be a book or any other reading material: timetables, recipes, instructions.
As travelling may be a little more difficult than in previous years, we would like to see you reading with family members and friends as you reunite.

What is done with the images?
The images can then be shared via our social media platforms to celebrate the reading being done and promote the competition to other families. Look out for photos from staff, who also take part in the promotion!
