School closure

Thursday 19th March 2020

Dear Parents & Carers,

As I am sure you are aware, at 5.15pm yesterday, the Secretary of State for Education gave a public statement that all schools in England would be closed from the end of the school day on Friday 20th March until further notice.

Having indicated that all schools would be closed, he then indicated that they would be expected to remain open for the children of key workers and for those in various vulnerable categories – providing a safe place and access to meals.

We had been anticipating this decision and have begun setting up online virtual classrooms and putting together materials for children to complete at home. Packs will be going out today to the children in school. If your child is absent today you will be able to collect a copy from the school office. They will also be given their login information for all online learning platforms.

The school is compiling a list of children who we think are eligible to continue in the reduced service. There is a link on the school facebook page if you feel that your child is eligible under the key worker scheme. We are still waiting for the government to clarify this.

The school is currently working with Havering Catering Services to see how we can support children on Free School Meals, I will hopefully give you more information about this tomorrow. Please remember that the school blog will be updated as soon as we have any further news.

During the closure, please make use of the school shared mailboxes where teachers will be available to offer support and respond to queries about home learning.

Thank you for your continued support.

Advice Regarding COVID-19 update:17/03/20

  • Advice Regarding COVID-19 Update 17/3

    Please read carefully to see further updates.

    The government’s guidance on COVID-19 has changed from the ‘contain’ phase to one of delaying the spread of the virus. We’re getting in touch to let you know what we’re doing in response to this change, and what we expect from you, to help make sure our school community keeps safe and calm.

    The updated situation from the 17/03/20:
    • the school remains open – this is the current official guidance we have been given;
    • any changes to school events will be communicated to you via the blog, letter or Facebook;
    • if you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.
    • it is likely that people living within a household will infect each other or be infected already. Staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community
    • for anyone in the household who starts displaying symptoms, they need to stay at home for 7 days from when the symptoms appeared, regardless of what day they are on in the original 14-day isolation period. (See ending isolation section for more information).

    Reporting an absence:
    • if your child is unwell, report this as you would normally by contacting the absence number via the school office on 01708 342880.
    • if you have reported your child's absence due to a new, contagious cough and/or a high temperature, then you must follow the isolation guidance. You cannot decide to send your child back prior to the isolation period.
    What we’re doing to protect and support pupils and staff:
    • our cleaners are taking extra care to clean all surfaces thoroughly;
    • we are continuously checking toilets to ensure there is an adequate supply of soap;
    • hand sanitisers have been purchased and are located in each classroom as well as soap.
    What we need you to do:
    • talk to your children about the coronavirus. It’s a scary time and we should make sure children feel supported. BBC Newsround has regular updates for younger children;
    • come and collect your child straight away, if we ask you to (we’ll contact you if they become ill with either a temperature or a new, continuous cough).
    What happens if the school has to close?
    We’ll only close if we’re either officially advised to do so or we don’t have enough staff to run the school. In either case, we will message parents through the blog, by letter or by Facebook and place a message on the school website.

    Please keep in mind that we’re only sending out this information to help the school community prepare. There are currently no plans to close but being prepared and equipped for this possibility is essential.

    If you have any questions please consult the:
    • school office - if you have any questions about our response to this issue;
    • NHS -  if you want to know more about the symptoms of coronavirus. If you think you or your child may have the symptoms, use NHS 111 online if at all possible before calling 111;
    • Department for Education’s coronavirus helpline: 0800 046 8687, if you have any questions about the government’s response to coronavirus in relation to schools;
    • Government’s travel advice -  if you want to know whether any upcoming trip or holiday you’re taking abroad should go ahead.

    As always, thank you for your continued support.

Home learning during Isolation

Home Learning

We have had a few queries regarding home learning whilst self isolation takes place. Whilst we appreciate and actively support the need for you to continue your child's education at home, we cannot send home individual packs for all children absent at this point. Below are some recommendations for you to support learning at home.

Routine
Try to have a routine. Follow this link to a great blog that shows how an ex-teacher/mum of three young children plans to fill her day with a mix of learning and play during a period of isolation. It is not necessary to follow it to the letter but it will certainly give us all some ideas.

Recommendations for home learning during self - isolation:
EYFS:
KS1
  • continue to read and share stories with your child daily.
  • learn weekly spelling as these will continue to be blogged
  • continue with Mathletics and RockStars
  • play puzzles and board games
  • use Scholastic for some pictures to write some sentences about. The 'secret doorway' picture looks intriguing. What do you think is behind it?
KS2
  • continue to read and share stories with your child daily.
  • learn weekly spelling as these will continue to be blogged
  • continue with Mathletics and RockStars
  • use Once Upon A Picture or The Literacy Shed to inspire some creative story writing. The lady stuck in the bottle looks like an interesting one! How did she get in there? Was it a trap?

What happens if the school has to close?

We’ll only close if we’re either officially advised to do so or we don’t have enough staff to run the school. In either case, we will message parents through the blog, by letter or by Facebook and place a message on the school website.

In the event of a closure, we will have work packs prepared for your child alongside our our online advice. We will of course update you with this information if needed.

Please keep in mind that we’re only sending out this information to help the school community prepare. There are currently no plans to close but being prepared and equipped for this possibility is essential.
