Broadford EYFS Setting Featured in Nursery World Magazine.
We were absolutely thrilled to be chosen by Nursery World magazine to illustrate a series of articles exploring the role of the adult in the Early Years settings. Julie Fisher wrote a four part series for the publication and thought that Broadford would be the perfect place to photograph pupils and practitioner working seamlessly together. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase what our staff and school does expertly to ensure the best outcomes for your children.
Who is Julie Fisher?
Julie Fisher is an independent Early Years Adviser and Visiting Professor of Early Childhood Education at Oxford Brookes University. She held the post of Early Years Adviser in Oxfordshire for 11 years, before which she was lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Reading. She has taught children from 3 to 12 years and has been headteacher of two urban, multi-cultural schools.
What is Nursery World?
Nursery World is a fortnightly magazine for early years education and childcare professionals in the United Kingdom. It was first published in 1925 and is now published in print form and online. The editor is Liz Roberts. In 2007, Haymarket Media Group acquired Nursery World from TSL Education.

We're In The Paper: Samanyu’s Poem
Congratulations to Samanyu who saw his Mother's Day poem chosen as the winning entry in the Mercury Mall competition this year. The competition was very strong as over 360 entries were submitted. It was also great to see another Broadford pupil - Kara - shortlisted too.
Following his success, Samanyu won a voucher for himself and his mum!

Secretary of State: Ideas from Broadford!
We were delighted to receive a letter from the new Secretary of State for Education. Having hosted Justine Greening in November, it was great to hear that our pupils made such an impact that Damian Hinds MP is already keen to get in touch.
We are very proud of the changes we have made at Broadford and the way they have had such a positive impact on results. To see that the Department of Education considers Broadford to be 'thought provoking and innovative' is high praise indeed.

We’re In The Paper: Review of the Year
We were delighted to see Broadford Primary featured in the Romford Recorder review of the year 2017. It was great to look back on the amazing accolade from the TES in June. This was a testament to the hard work, over six years, put in by staff, pupils, parents and Governors.

Chef of the Year
We are very proud of our school cook, Michelle Cook who made it all the way to the final in the ‘School Chef of the Year’ competition. Michelle designed her own delicious menu and impressed the judges, but didn’t scoop the top prize on this occasion. However, Michelle has started to come up with bigger and better ideas for next year and we will be rooting for her to go all the way in 2019. Until then, Michelle will continue to cook healthy dishes daily to keep our pupils full and satisfied.
Congratulations on all of your achievements Michelle.

We're In The Paper: Michelle Creed - Chef of the Year
We are delighted to announce that our School Chef - Michelle Creed has once again been nominated for the School Chef of the Year 2018 competition.
Michelle has made it to the regional finals that will take place on January 11, where she will prepare her two chosen dishes, mac and cheese bolagnese bake and a lime and coconut cheesecake, for the judges to taste.

“I chose these dishes, because the children love mac and cheese and really enjoy my creation which has a healthy twist, and the cheesecake is a light, fresh dessert. I’m so proud and I hope I can create the dishes to the best of my ability on the day.”
We have it as our mission to ensure that everything we deliver in our Learning Federation is world class: the environment, the teaching... even the catering. We are all extremely proud of what Michelle has achieved and we wish her all the best for January!

We're In The Paper: Education Secretary Visits Broadford
The Romford Recorder have featured the story about Justine Greening MP & Secretary of State for Education, visiting Broadford on the 30th November. Accompanied by local MP Julia Lopez - whose team had been instrumental in organising the visit - Miss Greening met pupils, read with Theo and looked at a range of lessons.
When questioned by pupils, she revealed that the secret of her success resilience! When life throws you a challenge, or you get a knock back, her motto is 'keep on trucking!'.

Secretary of State for Education Visits Broadford Primary
Following their success as being named as the Times Educational Supplement Overall School of the Year, Broadford Primary were delighted to welcome the Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening, who visited yesterday.
Eager to learn more about the approach that has led to the sustained success of the school, Miss Greening observed pupils in maths, topic and phonics lessons. Miss Greening also hosted a Q&A session with Broadford pupils who quizzed her on her career path, how she could help them with their career aspirations and whether school funding changes would limit the offer available to them in future.
Miss Greening was given a quick lesson in how to play the mental maths game 24, which develops the children's fluency with key number facts.
I started Miss Greening off with the one dot cards to help explain the rules. However she quickly picked up the game and even won a couple of rounds. Her maths was pretty good!

The Secretary of State also took time to talk at length with Learning Federation Governors, the school leadership team of both Broadford & Mead and Paul Wakeling - Headteacher of the Havering Sixth Form College.
At Broadford Primary our vision is to ensure that no child's future is limited by their background. To be able to show Justine Greening the different strategies that we have used to raise aspirations and outcomes for some of Havering's most vulnerable pupils was a real privilege. For the Secretary of State to take the time to talk to teachers, listen to pupils and demonstrate a very clear understanding of some practical ways we can improve our system for the benefit of the most vulnerable was so encouraging.

The pupils were very pleased to hear about the work of the Government to ensure that big business plays a much more direct and active role in promoting the future of the most vulnerable pupils.
Our Learning Federation has promoted meaningful links with businesses like Bloomberg and PwC. To hear today about the Skills Summit and the DfE efforts to make these links more structured is very positive. To provide a golden thread all the way through a child's education, linking their experiences and lessons to future employment will only aid mobility.

Julia Dockerill MP Visits Broadford
We were delighted to welcome newly elected MP Julia Dockerill to Broadford Primary last week. It was a fantastic opportunity for Julia to meet some of our Broadford pupils, talk to staff and get a better understanding of what made Broadford a unanimous choice for School of the Year.

We're In The Paper: Indie's Star of the Week
We were extremely proud to see Indie named as the Star of the Week by the Romford Recorder. Indie has to cope with two siblings who both have long term medical conditions. However she always has a cheery smile and is very enthusiastic about her reading.

For those of you who won't have had a chance to see the TES magazine, here is a copy of the article about our school. The journalist - Helen - came and spent a day with us to learn about what we do at Broadford and the progress the school has made over the last six years.

It has been fantastic to see the press coverage that winning the TES Award has bought the school. The finale has been the article in the TES which followed up on the awards. We can't say enough how proud we are of all of our school community: Governors, parents, staff and pupils. The combined team effort is what has put us in this position and it is that spirit that will ensure the standards and expectations remain high in the years to come.

We were delighted to make the front page of the Romford Recorder this week. For the last six years we have tirelessly promoted the achievements of the pupils as we have pushed to move Broadford from being the worst school in Harold Hill to one of the top rated schools in the country.
To see Harold Hill pupils celebrating their incredible achievement on the front page of a newspaper with a huge circulation is fantastic publicity for the children, which they richly deserve.

Our vision is that the socioeconomic background of a child should not limit their life chances. In Havering it is a sorry fact that there are some clear gulfs in wealth, opportunity and background even when some families live very close together.
Children born in RM3 will typically live for up to 7 years less than those born in RM14... Upminster and Cranham.
That is why we are committed to ensuring that your pupils get the very best teaching in every lesson of every day. We provide the best training opportunities and the richest resources to help our teachers deliver a world class education.
We have shown that - even though the Romford Recorder story this week suggests otherwise - we can overcome the deprivation and achieve outstanding results. However it is never a battle that is won and we must work hard together to ensure that the map below doesn't impact on our pupils life chances.

Congratulations to Sophie who has been selected as the Star of the Week. With her love of reading and conscientious attitude Sophie thoroughly deserved this recognition.

We're In The Paper: Shell Make The Future
Pupils from Broadford Primary were delighted to meet Rachel Riley (of Countdown & Strictly Come Dancing fame) when they attended the Shell 'Make the Future Live' event. This free festival of ideas and innovation was based at the Queen Elizabeth Park until Sunday 28 May, 2017.
Our pupils were able to experience bright ideas from other school children, older students, entrepreneurs and industries on what a lower-carbon energy future might look like. It really inspired them to see science being bought to life!
Amelia Chau - Year 6 Lead Teacher
Rachel Riley was there to launch the event at the heart of the festival - the Shell Eco-marathon Europe. This challenged students to design and build ultra energy efficient cars, and see which could travel the furthest on the least amount of energy. The current record stands at 3,771km – that’s from London to Helsinki and back again on just one litre of fuel!
Broadford's Charlie Cooper got to take part in a race with Jason Bradbury (presenter of The Gadget Show) using salt water powered cars.
I am worried that we are using more energy than ever before. This means the world has to reduce CO2 emissions or it will damage the climate forever. These salt water cars could be the future!

We're In The Paper: Bloomberg Visit
If you want something to read this week, get your copy of the Romford Recorder. They have published the latest story of our careers programme that saw our pupils visit the offices of Bloomberg at City Gate.
I was struck by the teamwork. They have a news station running 24hrs a day which has to switch between countries. There are people looking after the network, staff filling up the pantry, and lots of spaces for teams to meet. Now I can see why Mrs Smith and Mrs Nicholls keep telling us to develop our reciprocity skills.
