Dear Parents and Carers,
Diary Dates - Monday 18th October - Friday 22nd October
We are looking forward to welcoming parents on Monday and Tuesday for parent consultation evenings. On Monday afternoon staff from Bower park secondary school are coming in to visit our year 6 pupils.
Year 5&6 pupils will continue with their LAMDA sessions on Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday pupils are invited to come to school dressed in bright colours for our Black History Month celebration. The pupils have focused on carnival and all pupils will be taking part in a conga line. Ash class parents will be meeting Miss Delahunty for their parent consultation evening after school today. Redwood pupils are not going swimming this week and will be required to be collected at the normal time.
On Thursday year 6 pupils will be participating in a Mayan workshop during the morning.
We finish the half term with our Sports for Schools sponsored event and a visit from professional sprinter Frederick Afrifa. We will also be celebrating the pupils' success with our usual E for Excellence assemblies.
Black History Month
Here at Broadford, we have been loving studying Black History Month this October. This year we have been looking at all things CARNIVAL!
The children have learnt about the times of slavery and how the black community would organise special masquerade balls to celebrate the ending of lent. These previous black slaves took their knowledge of the masquerade balls and redeveloped the celebration by introducing aspects of their culture, for example, the music, food and costumes in order to celebrate freedom and equality. This began in Trinidad and Tobago and was the beginning of carnival. This celebration was to encourage everybody from different backgrounds and ethnicities to come together to celebrate life together. The black community wanted everyone to feel as one big family and everyone to love one another for their differences.
On Wednesday 20th October, Broadford will be holding our very own Carnival conga line through the school where the children can showcase their carnival decorations.
On this day the children are invited to come to school in non-uniform, they can wear anything bright and colourful to celebrate this day. We can't wait to celebrate with everyone!
Thank you
Thank you to all parents and carers who have attended our stay & learn sessions over the past few weeks. It has been wonderful to see so many parents back in school. We hope that you found the session informative and useful.
Year 6 Parents - 31st October 2021
The deadline for applying for secondary school places is fast approaching. Please ensure that you have registered for an online account and applied for a secondary place before this date. If you require any assistance please come into the office and see a member of the admin team.
Reception Admissions - September 2022
Are you a parent or do you know parents of children born between the 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2018? Yes? Your child is due to start an infant or primary school in the Reception year group in September 2022.
You must apply for places at your preferred schools before 15th January 2022. Applications after this date will be classed as late which could affect your chances of being offered one of your preferred schools.
Even though your child attends a school nursery, the law requires that you apply for a place at the school and that no priority can be given to pupils because they attend a school nursery.
If you live in Havering you must visit www.havering.gov.uk/admissions/primary to make your application. If you live outside of Havering please visit your Local Authorities website for information on how to apply for a school place.
Please ensure that you read all the information provided carefully, this includes reading the ‘Starting a Havering infant / primary school’ brochure which includes information on the admissions criteria for each school in Havering as well as information on how to apply for schools outside of Havering.
Should you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact the Havering School Admissions Team via:
· Online Enquiry Form (preferred method): www.havering.gov.uk/admissions/contact
· Webchat: www.havering.gov.uk/admissions/primary (use the ‘chat live with us’ function in the bottom right of the screen)
· Email: Schooladmissions@havering.gov.uk
· Phone: 01708 434600 (lines are open Mon-Fri, 12-5pm)
Breakfast
The children have been enjoying their breakfast bagels. These are available every morning for every child who wishes to have breakfast so that they are full and ready to start a day of learning.
School Photographs
Unfortunately, the school photographers experienced staff absence this week due to illness. They are going to return on Tuesday 19th October to complete the sibling photographs. However, this is only for siblings who are in the school and not for siblings who do not currently attend Broadford Primary School.
October Half Term School Meal Holiday Scheme
The Borough is continuing to support families via the School Holiday Meal Scheme as it did during previous holiday periods. The scheme is a way of providing funds to ensure that eligible families can purchase food over the October half-term holidays to replace the meals a child would have received during a school day.
Eligible families can apply to receive £15 per child per week to support with meals.
The application window will open from Monday 18 October at 9am, closing on Monday 25 October at 5pm. Families who received payment via the scheme previously do not need to reapply and will automatically receive the funds into their nominated bank account by week commencing Monday 25 October.
Eligible families who apply via the scheme for support and have not received money in the past, are expected to receive payments by week commencing Monday 8 November. If further eligibility checks are required, this may delay payment.
Details about the scheme will be updated on the Council’s website from Friday 15 October, with the application form going live from Monday 18 October.
Sports for Schools
We’re very excited to be welcoming top athlete Frederick Afrifa to Broadford Primary School on Friday 22 October 2021.
Frederick Afrifa will be leading a sponsored fitness circuit with all pupils and follow-up with a talk and question and answer session for the school. The aim of the event is to inspire the pupils to be more physically active, but just as importantly to encourage them to discover and then pursue their passion in life.
The aim of the event is both to connect the pupils to an extraordinary athlete role model, and to raise money to improve physical activity for the school while also supporting GB athletes (including Paralympic athletes).
A sponsorship form will come home with your child to use in order to help raise money for the event. You can also sponsor your child by going to
www.sportsforschools.org
and clicking on “Set up a fundraiser page”:
Please ensure that sponsorship forms and moneys are returned to the school office 1 week after the event has taken place.
Please also make sure that your child/children come to school on the event day with their PE Kits!
Thank you in anticipation of creating a terrific and memorable event.
Havering Catering Services
Week beginning 18th October is week 3 on the Havering catering services menu. All meals are served with unlimited salad and vegetables and cost £2.30.
Please be reminded that your child’s sQuid account should be topped up at all times. We cannot provide dinners for pupils whose account exceeds a debt of £10.
