Back to School Information for Parents!

Headteacher: Mrs L Nicholls
Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that you are all well and that you have had a safe and enjoyable summer break. On Wednesday 3rd September our school will be full of children again and we can't wait to begin the new academic year.

Pupils in years 1-6 return to school on Wednesday 3rd September.

Children should arrive at school between 8.30 - 8.45 am. The doors will be locked after this time and pupils will need to be brought to the office by an adult and will be marked late. The main gate to the school will be locked at 9.15 am. After this time you will need to be buzzed through by a member of the office staff.

Pupils in years 5&6 can walk home independently but only if we have parental permission for them to do so.

Parents of pupils in years 1-6 can enter the site via any of the gates on Faringdon Avenue and walk through the playground to the classroom doors and collect pupils from their classrooms.

Staff will be available to help direct you to the correct places.

Bringing Items into School
Children should continue to bring a named water bottle into school containing water only, no juices.
Children do not need to bring pencil cases into school. All resources will be provided by the school.

Uniform
All pupils are expected to return to school in full school uniform.
If you are eligible for a school uniform voucher, please contact the school office to request this if you haven't already received this.
PE days will be communicated with you by class teachers via the curriculum newsletter in the first week of term.
We would encourage all pupils to bring into school a pair of indoor shoes (slippers or plimsoles) that can be left in school and they can change into when in the classroom. This helps us to keep the school clean and hygienic for our pupils.

Breakfast Club

The breakfast club provision with Essex After Schools will open at 7.30am on the first day back. There will be a wide variety of food options on offer including cereals, toast and fruit. The hall will be set out with a range of activities and resources for the children to access during their time at the club. The cost of the Breakfast Club will be £4.00 per day.
Parents can pay via their tax free childcare account. If you are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare, you can set up an online childcare account for your child. For every £8 you pay into this account, the government will top up with £2 for you to use to pay your provider. Check your eligibility here https://www.gov.uk/get-tax-free-childcare
Breakfast club places from now on can be booked via phone: 07831360485 or email essexafterschoolclubs@gmail.com.

After School Childcare
From Wednesday 3rd September, Essex After School Clubs will be operating an after school child care facility. This can be booked via the contact details above. We also have the details of local childminders should you prefer this option, please ask at the office.

New Reception and Nursery Children

We are very excited to welcome our new pupils and families into Nursery and Reception over the next few weeks. You will have received information from the staff regarding visits and start dates and times. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the staff via the following emails.

reception@broadford.havering.sch.uk

School Dinners
All primary school pupils are entitled to free school meals. However, if you are eligible for the pupil premium funding we encourage you to continue to apply for this as this grant provides us with much needed funding to provide the best education to your pupils. Please see a member of the office staff to check your eligibility.

Havering Catering Services
Week beginning 1st September is week 2 on the Havering catering services menu.

I know that all staff are very much looking forward to welcoming all pupils back to school next week and we are most definitely looking forward to a great year ahead.

Kind regards,

Mrs L Nicholls

Group Chats 💬📱

Hi all,

Hope you're enjoying the holidays. Quick question to reflect on: what is the answer when group chats go wrong?

As a school, we deal with the fallout all too often: inappropriate language, social isolation, upset friendships... all spilling into the classroom and affecting learning. But much of it happens outside our walls: at home, on phones, unsupervised.

This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide explores the world of group chats: a space where children connect, but also where things can quickly go wrong. 💬📱

It’s a useful reminder for us all:

💡 What habits are we modelling?

💡 Are we talking to children about how to behave in digital spaces?

💡 How can we help them use tech to build others up, not tear them down?

A worthwhile read and a conversation starter.  We will definitely thinking about what we can do in school to help support the positive aspects.

Technology Attachment 💬📱

Hi all,

I hope you’re managing to find some time to relax and enjoy the summer. As parents, we often rely on technology for support – and that’s okay. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide is a great prompt to reflect on how tech is being used in our homes.

Phones and tablets can become emotional comfort blankets for children – helping them self-soothe, escape boredom or seek approval. This guide explores how technology attachment develops and what signs to look out for 👀.

With expert advice from digital wellbeing specialist Philippa Wraithmell, it also shares simple, practical tips to help children build healthier screen habits and reconnect with the world around them 🌍.

Even a small change might make a big difference 💬📱

End of Year Newsletter - Friday 18th July, 2025

Headteacher: Mrs L Nicholls
Dear Parents and Carers,

Part 1 Broadford News

End of the Academic Year

It is always a bitter-sweet moment writing the last newsletter of the term; whilst we all need a break - pupils and staff - the realisation sets in that another year is coming to an end. By the end of today the school will have an empty lifeless feel. There will be staff in school over the next few weeks, especially contractors and site team, but not the pupils full of their energy, excitement and thirst for learning that they bring.

The end of term is always busy with sporting events, colour runs, celebrations and awards which means that school days are less than ‘normal’ for pupils. However, we have had a memorable end of term and our pupils have made life long memories. The colour run and Broadford’s Got talent have demonstrated our pupils, strengths, camaraderie and talents. Congratulations to all pupils involved and thanks to our staff for making it happen.
On behalf of the staff at  Broadford Primary School, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable and safe summer holiday. We also wish our Year 6 pupils all the very best for a bright and successful future – we hope they look back at their time at Broadford with fondness and happy memories.

For those returning in September, I will see you all as the school doors open at 8.30 am on Wednesday 3rd September. I look forward to seeing our pupils in their smart Broadford Primary School uniform, ready for the challenges of a new academic year.

Many thanks to you all for your kind notes and thoughtful gifts. The children will be bringing home a gift from us today which we hope they will enjoy over the holidays.

Sporting Events

This term has been packed with exciting sporting events and fantastic achievements across all year groups. Year 5 students took part in Sports Crew Training, while our Year 5/6 pupils showed great determination in the Cross Country event, with children finishing between 3rd and 100th place out of 200 participants. The Wellbeing Festival introduced yoga to many students, and our football teams had strong showings across several events, including tournaments for Year 5/6 girls and boys, Year 3/4 (semi-finalists), and a festival for Year 1/2. Our Year 5/6 netball team finished 3rd in their group, and the same age group reached the semi-finals in Sitting Volleyball. Sportshall Athletics events were held for Years 1 through 6, and our students also participated in Racket Pack competitions and the London Mini Marathon. In inclusive sports, we proudly placed 3rd overall in both the SEND New Age Kurling and Boccia events, and students from Years 3 to 6 attended the SEND Sports Festival. In the Quad Kids competitions, children from Years 1 to 6 represented the school with great energy, and we finished 3rd overall at the Drapers Sports Day for Years 2 to 6. Well done to all our athletes for their effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship! To add to this amazing news we have also achieved the schools games gold mark.
A super thanks to Miss Evans and Miss Wyatt who have organised and prepared the pupils for these events.

Opal

We are thrilled that this year our school has reached an impressive milestone in outdoor learning! With an outstanding assessment score of over 90%, we are now ranked among the top 10% of schools in the country for our commitment to providing exceptional outdoor learning experiences. This achievement reflects our dedication to enriching our pupils' education and fostering a deep connection with nature. We believe that outdoor learning plays a vital role in developing well-rounded, confident, and curious learners. Thank you for your continued support as we strive for excellence in all that we do! Well done to Mrs Stanley and the team who achieved this impressive award.

Creative
This year, our students have been involved in a variety of exciting music and performance opportunities. Thirty pupils participated in Young Voices at the 02 in January, bringing energy and enthusiasm to their singing. The KS2 choir also had the privilege of performing at the Havering Music Festival at the Queen's Theatre, showcasing their talent and dedication. Throughout Black History Month, the whole school engaged in a celebration of music and creativity, learning and reflecting on important aspects of history and culture. Our pupils also took part in the Line Dancing Festival as part of the University of Broadford’s sports edition, where they embraced rhythm and movement. Meanwhile, our iRock rock bands have been practicing weekly for their end of term concerts, and Front Row musicians have been honing their skills on the ukulele and keyboards through regular practice sessions. Additionally, students preparing for LAMDA (Speech and Drama) examinations have been practicing weekly, perfecting their performances in preparation for their exams. It's been a year full of music, creativity, and growth, and we're proud of all our young performers!

General Knowledge Quiz

A team of four Year 5/6 pupils participated in the Havering Rotary interschool quiz, achieving an impressive first place and securing a spot in the semi-finals. They went on to perform admirably in the semi-finals, finishing in fourth place.

Junior Duke

We are thrilled to announce that 45 of our pupils have successfully graduated from the Junior Duke Project, the primary version of the Duke of Edinburgh Award! The Junior Duke Project encourages young learners to develop essential life skills and engage in a variety of activities that promote personal growth and community involvement. Our pupils have worked hard to achieve their Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards, showcasing their dedication and commitment. Congratulations to all our graduates for their remarkable achievements! We are so proud of you and can't wait to see how you continue to shine in the future.
Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you to all of the parents for supporting the pupils during these projects and to Miss Float and Mrs Stanley for making this all happen.

Goodbye
Today we are saying goodbye to Mrs Spence who has worked at Broadford for 30 years. During her time here she has worked 1:1 with pupils, supported EAL learners and worked in every year group throughout the school. We will all miss Mrs Spence and her kind and caring nature, however, we do wish her a very happy retirement. She has definitely earned it.
Miss Onybi and Miss Jewel are both moving to new schools. Miss Onybi is flying to Dubai to teach the early years in an international school and Miss Jewel is moving to work in the London Borough of Hackney. We wish them both all the best as they begin their new roles. Thank you to all of the above staff for thor very valuable input into our school and the lives of our pupils.

Summer Reading Challenges

There are lots of fun reading activities that children can take part in over the summer holidays.

Summer Reading Challenge Tracker: All children have received a copy of this year’s Broadford Summer Reading Challenge Tracker. Our tracker is bursting with ideas and ways of keeping your children reading during your summer break away from school. Children should hand their completed trackers into the school library by Friday 5th September for a special certificate!

National Summer Reading Challenge: This year's National Summer Reading Challenge theme is Story Garden! Children are now able to sign up by visiting your local library or signing up online by visiting their website - https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk If your child completes the challenge, let us know via our Library Instagram @BroadfordLibrary or email library@broadford-havering.sch.uk.

Get Caught Reading!: During the summer holidays, parents/carers and other family members look out for chances to ‘catch their child reading’. This can be a book or any other reading material, such as timetables, recipes or instructions. Children may be reading on holiday somewhere, snuggled up at home, in the local library, up a tree in the garden - the more creative, the better! The photos can then be shared via our social media platforms to celebrate the reading being done and to promote the competition to other families. Send your child’s photo (one entry per child please) to either our Library Instagram @BroadfordLibrary or email library@broadford-havering.sch.uk. We will choose one winner and one runner-up from each Key Stage. These lucky ones will be rewarded with a prize. All entries need to be in by Wednesday 3rd September.
