Count On Us Final
Our three mathematicians are now inside City Hall, ready for the start of the final. 14 schools are competing for the title of Count On Us Champions... with two schools from Harold Hill!

Finley's Award
Congratulations to Finley on his recent soccer award. Finley went to Kent to take part in his cousins football course.
I had to play in a mini tournament that was based around the Copa America: Colombia, Argentina and Brazil.

To win the trophy he had to do his best in all of the games.
In my group I came second with the number of goals scored. I learnt how to improve my step over and the Maradona.

Learning Challenge Awards
Emily & Daniel have both been working hard at home on their projects. Inspired by the Language of the Term (Spanish) Emily designed a huge flag which shows different aspects of Spanish culture.
I have really enjoyed listening to the Spanish music - the flamenco tunes we had in class were fun and made me want to dance. However I don't really like bull fighting, it seems a bit cruel.

Meanwhile Daniel has been toiling away on his learning challenge, which is based on William Wilberforce.
I learnt that it was William who helped to get the Anti Slavery Act passed. However we have been looking at the news in class and it seems that many people around the world are still treated as slaves.

Redbridge Cycle Centre
We were delighted to take our latest batch of Y5 cyclists to the Redbridge Cycling Centre to develop their skills. After completing their Bikeability Level 2, we believe it is vital to keep challenging the pupils and placing them in challenging contexts to develop their cycling skills.
Redbridge CC is a fantastic facility for cyclists of all abilities, from families to competitive riders. The Centre has purpose built road, BMX & off road tracks.
I couldn't believe how steep the Hoggenburg Hill was! Phil had told us that it would be a great place to use our gear skills... but it took a lot of puff.

Having completed their Ready to Ride checks with their bikes and equipment, the children had a chance to explore the road track, before embarking on a series of speed and control challenges.
We learnt about why changing gears is so important in a race. When you are going downhill you need to change gears to help you pedal and go as fast as possible. However when the slope kicks in, you have to change gears again quickly so you don't lose momentum. If the person in front of you got it wrong you could quickly catch them up!

Now they have tackled these challenges the pupils are just about ready for the Olympic Cycle park!

Book Club Visit Theatre
This week our budding book club readers have been up to London to see Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.
After six weeks of studying the text and learning about the characters, it was their chance to go and see the book bought to life on the West End Stage.
I couldn't believe the Oompa Loompas... they were hilarious. Their little legs and songs were just like I thought they would be. My favourite part was when Violet Beauregarde blew up into a giant purple disco ball.

Miss Sparkes works with a small group of pupils to study a text in more detail. They look at the plot, themes, characters, settings and author in much more detail than you could normally do in class. The sessions are every week, for a term.
What is the impact?
Our pupils who have taken part benefit in a number of ways:
85% have never seen a West End show before going through Book Club
100% strongly agree that they have a much better understanding of the story then they would have had
82% go onto read at least two other books by that author
100% strongly agree that it has helped them see reading as a good choice for leisure time

Thank you to Mead Primary who kindly lent us their DJI Phantom Drone. It meant that we were able to get some great shots of the school, and video footage of our pupils at the Redbridge CC.
It is quite amazing to see the school from these very different perspectives.
We are very excited about now getting our own drone and using it to record the progress as the old building is demolished and the new structure rises from the ground.

Staff GOSH BT Tower Climb
Well done to our staff team who successfully completed the BT Tower Challenge in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Our team was delighted to have the exclusive opportunity to climb of one of London’s most iconic buildings, the BT Tower.
'Normally off-limits to the public, this was our chance to soar 191 metres above the ground. After feeling the burn over 34 floors and over 1,000 steps, we were very pleased to see that we were going to be rewarded at the top with the chance to experience spectacular views of the city and get a glass of champagne.'

All of our climbers were asked to commit to fundraise a minimum of £250 to help the patients and families of Great Ormond Street Hospital. The well-earned funds will go towards supporting the hospital's ambitious redevelopment programme.
Back at school our pupils have also been involved with their own sponsored event and an assembly from the hospital staff.
