Weekly Newsletter - Friday 10th September

Headteacher: Mrs L Nicholls

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you

Thank you to all parents and well done to all pupils this week for reverting back to our normal arrangements for the start and the end of the day.

Mr Martin will open the small waiting area on Farringdon Avenue at 8 am so that you can wait in this area instead of on the pavement if you arrive before 8.30 am.

A reminder to all year 1 parents that from Monday, pupils will walk to their classrooms independently. Year 1 staff will come to the gate to meet pupils and ensure that they get to the correct classroom.

At the end of the gate the Faringdon Avenue gates will be locked at 3.20 pm and any pupils who have not yet been collected will need to be met at the office for dismissal.
Thank you all so much for everything you are doing for the safe arrival and dismissal of our pupils.

Reception & Nursery

It is really pleasing to see how well our reception children have settled in their first week at Broadford. They have only been attending in small groups and for half a day this week - but so far so good! We hope that all pupils, parents and families feel very welcome here at Broadford.

Our nursery children have been visiting and have had the opportunity to get to know the practitioners in our nursery setting in preparation for their start in the near future. We are looking forward to them attending everyday very soon and we hope that they are looking forward to this as well.

Year 6 Parents

As your child is now in Year 6, now is the time that you will need to make an application for your child to start secondary school in September 2022.

Without an application your child will not be offered a Secondary school place.

Please visit the Havering website www.havering.gov.uk/admissions/secondary where you will find a brochure titled  ‘Transferring to a Havering Secondary School in September 2022’ along with a short presentation video which explains the application process and answers some of the most common questions asked by parents. You will also find a link to the application system (eAdmissions).

All applications for Secondary Schools must be submitted online by no later than 31 October 2021.

Year 5 Parents

Normally at this time of year, the local secondary schools would be inviting parents and pupils to visit the schools in preparation to apply when pupils are in year 6.

Given the current concern around Covid-19, some Havering Secondary Schools have taken a decision to amend / cancel the initial published open evening arrangements.

Please visit the schools website or contact them directly for the latest open evening information.

Some schools have indicated that these events may now need to be pre-booked to allow schools to control numbers and some have taken a decision to only hold a virtual open evening. In all cases where parents are allowed on schools premises, appropriate PPE and social distancing measures will be required.

Front Row Music

From Monday 13th September teachers from front row music will resume music lessons in school every Thursday. They offer guitar, ukulele and keyboard lessons for pupils in years 1-6 and these sessions take place during the school day. There are some places available for the autumn term. For further information please click on this link

Lunch Times

We are re-introducing our lunchtime clubs from 13th September. On a Monday and Friday there will be a quiet time club for pupils who wish to take part in some calmer lunchtime activities and have some away from the business of the playground. Every Tuesday pupils in years 5&6 are invited to take part in circuit training on the gym equipment. Each week all lunchtime staff will be looking for the class who demonstrate kindness and politeness (Pupil job number 3) and these pupils will be invited to eat their lunch at the VIP table on a Friday. There will be tablecloths, flowers and squash available for the pupils to enjoy.

Stay & Learn

We are absolutely thrilled to be able to offer parents the opportunity to ‘stay & learn’ this term. These sessions are designed to give you an insight into how the pupils learn at school and  provide further information on what you can do to support your child’s learning. These sessions will be focused on literacy, particularly reading.

Year 1 - Thursday 30th September

Year 2 - Tuesday 28th September

Year 3 - Thursday 7th October

Year 4 - Thursday 12th October

Year 5 - Tuesday 5th October

Year 6 - Thursday 14th October

We look forward to welcoming you into school on the above dates.

Uniform
Premier Schoolwear have been inundated with orders at the beginning of the school year. They are running slighting behind and have asked for your patience and co-operation if you are waiting for your order. They endeavour to get these orders out to you as soon as possible.

Pupil Premium
The Government uses the number of children registered as eligible for Free School Meals as the basis for allocating extra funding to our schools.  This is called ‘Pupil Premium’ funding and it has fantastic potential for supporting all of the pupils at our schools.  That’s why it is so important that we have as many eligible parents and families sign up as possible
If you apply and are successful here are some of the benefits:

●        You will receive a £40 voucher per child, per year to assist with the cost of school uniform redeemable at Premier Schoolwear.

●        The school can provide assistance with contributions towards school trips and residential visits.

●        After school clubs can continue to be free of charge

●        Access to the Holiday Activities and Food Programme during the Christmas holidays and future school holidays for as long as government funding is continued

Remember - you don’t actually have to eat the school dinners!
Some children or families are put off because they think that Free School Meals status means that they have to eat the school lunches. This is not true! Should you prefer to bring a packed lunch from home, that is absolutely fine. But the school will still get this important funding.  Even KS1 children who already receive Universal Free School Meals may still be eligible for this funding.

You may be eligible if you get any of the following:

●        Income Support

●        income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

●        income-related Employment and Support Allowance

●        support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

●        the guaranteed element of Pension Credit

●        Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

●        Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

●        Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

If it is confirmed that your child is entitled to free school meals, they will remain eligible until they finish this phase of schooling (primary) they are in on 31st March 2022. There will be no need to inform the school or council if your personal circumstances change.
What to do now:
You can make your application on the Havering Council website:
https://www.havering.gov.uk/info/20006/schools_and_education/431/school_support

OR if you prefer, you can contact the school office and give your details and permission and we can check your eligibility for you.
