Central habits to success as a lifelong learner are; an ability to organise yourself, resilience to stick at a task you struggle with, manage time effectively and most importantly - to learn through reading. As a school we have a responsibility to make reading 'normal' for our pupils. This is why we invest so much in our library and reading activities. We want staff and pupils to talk about books and model to each other the importance of reading in our lives.
We want our pupils to learn good habits of reading and establish reading as a supremely glorious human act. That is why we have come up with 105 books to read before you leave Broadford. There are 15 books per year group. Each year pupils can earn their Bronze, Silver and Gold reading awards and earn rewards on their reading journey. By the time they leave us in year 6 they would have made their way through a great list of books, old and new. These titles are sure to inspire more reading and a love of books for years to come.
This reading system is in addition to the regular reading books that are sent home weekly. This is about developing our children's love of reading and it may be that you sit and read these books with or to your child. We have these books in school for the children to borrow or you may have some of these books at home to enjoy together. You could also visit your local library and borrow titles from the list.
We want to encourage our pupils to read quality texts and really enjoy and appreciate them rather than trying to read as many books as possible. It may be that your child loves these books so much that they want to read them over and over again. We believe these 105 quality texts will enrich the pupils reading journeys.
This academic year we are introducing a reading assembly. This is when staff will share a title from the 105 books list with the children and I'm sure the pupils will enjoy reading these wonderful stories read aloud!
The first assembly is today and Mrs Ward will be sharing an extract from Matilda with KS2 pupils and Mrs Nicholls will be reading Each Peach Pear Plum to KS1 pupils.
