Get Caught Reading

We've had two more entries via Facebook for the Get Caught Reading competition. Miss Sparkes has some book vouchers to give away to those children with the best pictures.

Sienna, Sophie and Zac settled down to read a book outside the Tower of London - can you spot the World War 1 memorial in the background?

Vinnie was having a quick read in a restaurant before the food was served!

Where will you be caught reading?

Bouncy Castle Day 2014

On a wet August day, why not look back at some photos of our pupils bouncing in the sunshine as a reward for their great attendance this year! Incredibly they managed to beat the target set in September, scoring a whopping 95.6%. Well done to all of our families for helping to ensure that attendance continues to rise.

It is no surprise that every year attendance has risen, exam results have as well!

Superstar Readers

Razvan Gabreanu had a great idea. He noticed that there was not a certificate to recognise when pupils became Free Readers. Razvan has just completed our reading scheme and is now able to choose books of his own from the library... and he has the award to prove it!

Amy has been working hard to reach her Bronze level for reading. Well done for completing 10 books! Kep up that reading over the summer with the Havering Reading Challenge and Miss Sparkes's Get Caught Reading Competition.

EOY Awards - Outstanding Contribution

This award is chosen by the class teacher. The criteria is that pupils must have made a substantial contribution to improving the everyday life of the class. This can be through having a relentlessly positive attitude; always being kind and caring to classmates; making exceptional contributions to learning (ideas, projects, resources); always being available to help others (including the teacher); having a good sense of humour... or just a mixture of all of the above.

Well done to those who have been chosen for 2013-14 and thank you for all you have added to your class!

Fact Hunters: Kangaroos, horses and cats

Simona Raklevicius:
Did you know that kangaroos can jump up to three times their own height? Because of their large feet, they can jump up to 9 metres in a single bound!

Sophie Adams:
Amazingly it is possible for horses to sleep standing up, or lying down. As a result of their eyes being on the side of their head, they are able to see almost 360 degrees. The fastest horse has been clocked at speeds of 55mph!

Arianna Solomon:
On average cats spend 2/3 of each day asleep! They have very good night vision - they are able to see light at six times lower than the level humans can.

We're In The Paper: Jessica Star of the Week!

Jessica Rideout has been chosen as the Star of the Week for the Romford Recorder. She has been an excellent member of the Lunchtime Club this year:

  • always friendly and helpful to new members
  • keen to talk about what she is doing
  • much more confident at speaking in front of others
Well done Jessica for all the progress you have made, we're very proud of you.

EOY Awards - 4Rs

At Broadford we have defined the skills that the children need to have for effective learning as:

  • Reciprocity - shown interdependence, collaborated with other effectively, listened to others, imitated effective ideas and displayed empathy
  • Resilience - shown perseverance during challenging tasks, managed distractions to stay focused, noticed patterns in learning, been absorbed in your learning
  • Resourcefulness - been curious about learning, made links between ideas to help solve challenges, used your imagination effectively, reasoned methodically and made the most of resources
  • Reflectiveness - planned carefully, revised ideas following feedback, identified key features, talked about their learning
By using a consistent language to praise the children for the progress we will be able to encourage a growth mindset - failure is something to be embraced as it always teaches you something new!

At the end of the year, teachers choose pupils from their class who have demonstrated these skills well throughout each of the three terms.

Look out for the blog posts that celebrate the children chosen for these end of year awards.
