Week beginning Monday 26th June is week 1 on the Havering catering services menu. All meals are served with unlimited salad and vegetables and cost £2.20.

On Monday 25th June in the morning year 1 are going to Lidl to buy ingredients for the cakes they are going to make and enjoy at their tea parties.

On Tuesday 26th Year 6 are going to the Junior Citizenship event which supports their transition to secondary school. We are welcoming our new reception parents to school in the evening.

On Wednesday 27th the first group of year 1 pupils are welcoming their parents to school for their tea party. After school , it is the first of our school book fairs in the hall.

On Thursday 28th Reception pupils are going to visit Paradise Park and we hope they have a great day.

School is closed on Friday for an INSET day.

Dear Parents and Carers,

There are only 4 weeks left of this academic year! And so much to do! As you will see from the diary information there are still lots of visits/experiences planned for the rest of the term- lots to look forward to!

Well Done

A huge congratulations to Mr Portway, Miss Evans and all of the pupils who took part in the Primary sports day at Drapers’ Academy on Monday. We are thrilled and extremely proud to announce that Broadford Primary were the overall winners and brought home the winners shield. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all. Well done Team Broadford!

Good Luck

Let’s hope that the winning streak continues. On Friday 22nd June, staff members from Mead will be attending the prestigious TES awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The school has been shortlisted so please keep your fingers tightly crossed for Mead Primary School. We will of course inform you, if we get good news. Good luck Team Mead.

Book Fair

The Book Fair will be held after school on Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Monday 2nd. We will, if that's okay with clubs, be in the hall. Our volunteers will be hosting a summer holiday themed fair. All books are 3 for 2. National Book Tokens can be used.

LFPA

The LFPA will be holding a Summer Fete on Saturday 30th June  at Mead Primary School between 11 am - 4 pm. This will be a great day for the whole family. Bring your friends, families and neighbours along to join in the fun. If you are able to give up some time on the day or would like to run a stall at the fete, please see one of the LFPA volunteers. Key Stage 2 Choir - LFPA Fete

I am delighted to announce that Broadford Primary’s Key Stage 2 choir have been invited to perform at the LFPA Summer Fete on Saturday 30th June. The choir will be joined by the Key Stage 2 choir at Mead and will be sharing a small selection of the songs that they sang at the Havering Junior Music Festival.

This is another great opportunity for the children to share all of the hard work they have been doing in choir rehearsals. Parents are welcome to attend the fete and we would love to see as many parents there as possible.

The children will be performing at 12:00pm so please could they be dropped off at 11:45am so that they are ready to start promptly.

Year 4 Poetry Workshop & Festival

Over the course of last week the Multi Story Theatre Company worked in four Romford schools with a variety of year groups. Ardleigh Green Infants, Broadford, Ardleigh Green Juniors and Mead Primary, all took part in an inspiring Poetry Week celebration.

The ambition for the week was to engage the children in the joy of speaking poetry out loud: how do the words sound and feel as they’re spoken, where does the poem connect with you – head, heart or body?

One of the joys of the week was seeing how the children responded to a challenging collection of poems. Several of Carol Ann Duffy’s poems were featured and these bought out the best in every age group. In fact, the more complex and challenging the poem, the more mature the response.

“As theatre practitioners and workshop leaders we can honestly say that leading these Poetry and Performance workshop weeks is one of the most satisfying experiences of the year. It’s really moving to watch the quality of the children’s understanding of the world developing through their engagement with poetic language. It is also so pleasing to see a group of schools working together to champion the performing arts and use them to inspire the children!”

As a cluster we offer the pupils a wide range of opportunities to showcase their skills and talents: poetry, spelling, sports and maths. Seeing them all collaborate and enjoy the language of some great poems was a real joy. To also share that with parents from all four schools made the event even more memorable.

The last word comes from an Ardleigh Green pupil. 

“Our poem was ‘Begged’ by Carol Ann Duffy. It was great fun to read it out loud as it was packed with tricky rhymes, alliteration and twists. I did feel nervous, but I loved the performance and want to do it again.”

Poetry Festival 2018

At the start of the Poetry Festival each year, we have a joint performance from our Mead & Broadford pupils. Despite only having a short time to read and rehearse the challenging poem our pupils gave a great rendition.

I loved performing as part of a larger group. It was nice to have our Broadford friends with us. I know alot of them anyway and we have done lots of different things together now.

Learning this poem was tough, but I really enjoyed it. Because we were a large group it didn't matter if you made a small mistake, the others could help you out.

We believe that one of the strengths of our Federation is the way we build in chances for the children to come together for joint experiences. This week we have had our Year 5 pupils from both schools enjoying a joint residential trip to Mersea island, while our Year 4s combined for the Poetry festival. The impact of this is that the children really agree that they feel they are part of a much wider community and get extra opportunities as a consequence - 87% strongly agreed in the pupil survey.

Mersea 2018

With more than sixty acres of carefully maintained grounds and commanding far-reaching views over the estuary, our Learning Federation pupils had a fantastic venue for their Outdoor Education Experience this year.

At the Mersea centre, our pupils were able to access a comprehensive range of facilities including a new toilet and shower block, dining rooms, a laundry room, a large well-equipped main hall and even a big screen cinema room!

All the pupils experienced the same activities, just in a different order: biking, climbing, challenge courses, archery and clambering through plenty of mud.

Reciprocity
We had to work together to try and solve the 'fish stick challenge'. We only had three moves but we had to reverse the way the fish was facing on the ground. By all helping and contributing ideas we were able to solve the problem

Our instructor - Lucy - gave us an extra pupil to get round the course. His name was Steve. Unusually he was a bucket of water... and we weren't allowed to spill him. The only way we could get him up and over the obstacles was to work together.

Resilience
Some of the challenges were really hard. Their climbing wall is massive. If you wanted to get all the way to the top you had to show real resilience. It was tough.

Reflectiveness
When we all came round the camp fire together it was a chance to think about our Peaks (best bits) and Pits (worst challenges). My peak was overcoming a fear of heights on the climbing wall. My pit was falling over in the mud and getting soaked.

Thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to make the residential possible. It was great to see all of the staff from both schools taking part in every activity with real enthusiasm. Look out for Miss James and Mr Portway in the video!
