Bubbling with enthusiasm, Harold Hill mathematicians from three different Primary schools took part in a maths competition at Broadford Primary last week. Competing in teams of three, the pupils had to use their mental and teamwork skills to make the number 24, arrange pentominoes and work out how to arrange their tangram pieces.
Teams from Broadford, Mead and Pyrgo Priory all took part in the event. The event consisted of three rounds: tangrams, pentominoes and then the 24 Game. For the first two events, the pupils has to work in their teams to solve the shape puzzles. Once they had refreshed themselves with a piece of cake and a juice, it was time for the individual part of the competition.
For this the pupils moved around different groups for six rounds. At the end their individual scores were combined to make a team total. The winner of the event was the team from Pyrgo Priory, who scored a huge 720 points! Broadford Primary finished runners up tied with Mead... but the real winner was Maths.
We have developed the competition this year so that there is a better balance between team and individual events. Pupils also find it challenging as they have to be confident with both shape and number challenges. Seeing the pupils relishing the challenges was fantastic. All of them played the games with a very competitive but friendly attitude. This has been a perfect rehearsal for the final in London which comes next term!

What is the 24 Game?
Every card has the same answer... 24 but the way that you make it (using addition, multiplication, addition and subtraction) differs greatly from one card to the next.
You have to be really fast with your calculations, or the other children will beat you to the card! At first I was a bit nervous, but the more we played the better I became. I can't wait to get back to school and practice more so I become even quicker.
Tanya - Mead Primary (aged 11)
I loved the tangrams. The patterns are really very simple, but when you have only got a shadow to work with, putting the pieces in the right place is really tricky.

Why are Harold Hill schools taking part in this event?
The schools believe that mental maths and having confidence with calculations from an early age are the keys to a successful future. The program is supported by the Mayors Fund for London.
"Numeracy is a key area that my team wants to help tackle in schools. London schools are doing well but can do even better, and I applaud the Mayor’s Fund for London in its efforts to help thousands more young Londoners develop an ability that will be vital for their future employability."

ReplyDeleteMy husband left me and our 2 kids for another woman for 3 years. I tried to be strong just for my kids but I could not control the pains that torment my heart. I was hurt and confused. I needed help, so I did some research on the internet and came across a site where I saw that Dr. Aluya a spell caster, can help get lovers back. I contacted him and he did a special prayer and spells for me. To my surprises, after some days, my husband came back home. That was how we reunited again and there was a lot of love, joy and peace in the family.
