Helping Your Child Manage Worries: The Power of the Circle of Worry and Circle of Control
As parents, we all want our children to feel confident and resilient, but it's natural for them to experience worries from time to time. Whether it’s about school, friendships, or changes in their lives, these worries can feel overwhelming. One powerful tool that can help children manage anxiety and regain a sense of calm is the Circle of Worry and Circle of Control.
During assembly time this week, pupils in Y3 to Y6 have trying out this simple yet effective concept that helps children (and adults!) focus on what they can control and let go of things beyond their influence.
- The Circle of Worry represents all the things that cause worry but are outside of their control
- The Circle of Control highlights actions they can take to feel better and take charge of their emotions.
Next time your child is feeling anxious or overwhelmed, try encouraging them to draw their own circles. Ask them to list their worries in the larger Circle of Worry, and then help them identify what they can control and influence in the smaller Circle of Control. This exercise can give them a sense of empowerment and help them focus on positive steps they can take to manage their feelings.
We encourage you to give it a go as a family. It’s a great way to open up conversations about worries and encourage children to reflect on what truly matters. When faced with challenging moments, remind them: while they can’t control everything, they have the power to control their actions and reactions.
