Petr Horacek Author Visit

On Friday our Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 pupils were given an inspiring talk on what it takes to become a writer by Petr Horacek. He had some great tips for what helps him to write:

  • Start with a drawing/picture. If you can create it yourself even better. The image below is a painting of a very unusual cat: it likes to drink hot chocolate; its best friends are the fishes; bath time comes in the fish bowl and he has a picture of his friend Mouse on the wall
  • Don't be afraid to change things: the sky can be green and people can behave in unusual ways
  • If you start a story, don't worry if you haven't got an ending. Some of the best stories have to be left a while. Eventually the ending will come to you.
  • Try and think about how others feel. Petr wrote a story about a fly. They can do amazing things, like fly. But flies are also lonely. No one likes them.
  • Petr explained to the children that getting messy with his art work helps him to think: collage, clay and paint are all mediums he likes to work with.
During the assembly he also read out some of his stories and showed his collection of pop up books. Afterwards Petr completed two storybook making workshops with Year 2. We can't wait to read their stories!
