KS2 Visit Queen's Hospital

The recent visit we made to the Queen's Hospital has been featured on their website!

Pupils recently went on a very interesting trip to Queen's Hospital. The pupils - led by Miss Morris - were given the opportunity to examine scans and x-rays that had been taken, with a radiologist explaining what the images showed.

Jane Stevens then took them into the Pathology laboratory to look at blood cells under a microscope and discuss how blood cells work to fuel our bodies and protect us. Cathy Dunne came to meet the children and talk about her role as a nurse within the hospital and the way she helps to care for patients.

After some light refreshments, Miss Morris took the children to meet one of the hospital's physiotherapists and find out more about the rehabilitation of patients once they have had their operation. Finally they were given a very dramatic demonstration of CPR from consultant cardiologist Andrew Deaner. He talked about how the heart works, problems that can arise and how he and his team help to save patients' lives.

"I didn't know how a pacemaker works... and now I do. The CPR was really useful. If someone has a heart attack I think I could help them!" Emma Groom - Year 5

" I had no idea there were so many different jobs and teams working together. Just to make one person better, so many have to be involved. It was really interesting!"

We would like to extend a big thank you to all the staff for giving up so much of their time for what was a very informative and interesting visit.
