On Monday 7th September we will be celebrating International Literacy Day.
Did you know that approximately 775 million (64% of whom are women) are illiterate, meaning they lack the basic reading and writing skills to manage daily living and employment tasks.
The cost of illiteracy to the global economy is estimated at £761 billion. The effects of illiteracy are very similar in both developing and developed nations. This means that the impact of illiteracy – limited opportunities for employment or income generation, higher chances of poor health, propensity towards crime or dependence on social welfare or charity (if available) – can be found wherever illiteracy is found.
On Monday 7th September, children may bring in their favourite reading literature (story book/comic, non fiction book anything that can be read and is enjoyed). Each year group will nominate somebody to share their favourite book and read an excerpt during Monday's assembly. Staff will also share their favourite books and stories.
Straight after lunch, the pupils will buddy up with another class to read and share books for half an hour.
