London Legacy Volleyball Cup

Pupils from Broadford Primary were delighted to be invited along to watch the London Legacy Volleyball Cup at the Olympic Park at the weekend. As guests of Volleyball UK, the pupils got to watch the finals of the competition, interview a member of the Team GB Olympic Volleyball team and try out their skills on the Spike Zone speed camera.

Volleyball has become an integral part of the PE curriculum following the installation of an Olympic size beach volleyball court on the school playground last year. In addition Broadford Primary have their own sports coach who has just completed his Volleyball coaching qualification!

"Volleyball is a great sport for our pupils to compete in. The sport requires great hand eye co-ordination, agility and teamwork making it perfect for Primary school children. Being able to play on our own beach court gives the lessons that extra wow factor! To have this opportunity for the children to meet the superstars of the sport and see it played to such a high level by men and women was such a fantastic opportunity"
Mr Steve Portway - Sports Coach

The competition - held on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th - was England’s biggest volleyball event of 2015. It was headlined by Polish powerhouse and Champions League Final Four Club PGE Skra Bełchatów.

"I've never been to a live sporting event before! I didn't know what to expect. The game was fast and furious... the women could hit the ball so hard. When we got to speak to Peter Bakare - the Olympian - he told us how he had travelled to over 30 countries to play volleyball. I'm definitely going to join the after school club now!
Charlotte Walsh - Year 6
In addition the children also got to watch the reigning French Women’s Ligue A champions, RC Cannes, and elite German women’s team, Schweriner SC, who both competed in the women’s section.
The English teams comprise Team Northumbria, reigning Volleyball England Super 8s champions for both men and women, CBL Polonia London men and Polonia SideOut London women.
'We'd like to say a huge thank you to Volleyball UK who gave us the chance to experience the atmosphere in the iconic Copper Box Arena. For our pupils to have the chance to join the crowds for this exciting professional sports competition was amazing and it has really helped to further inspire their interest in the sport!"
Malcolm Drakes - Headteacher
