Year 1 Bear Superheroes

If you go down to the woods this week you're in for a big surprise! Year 1 pupils at Broadford Primary have been dressing up as bears and completing a range of activities to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund. In their topic they have learnt that bears are facing a number of human threats: their habitat is being cut down, global warming is melting the ice and bears are being treated badly in captivity. The pupils wanted to do something to raise money to help the charities that support the bears. First they held a Bear Hunt.

'The pupils were really excited! They had to dress as bears and hunt round the school for clues. Our best bear detectives managed to find over 30 bears hidden around the grounds. We had a dress up activity. The total raised was well over £500! A fantastic effort.'
Miss Trudie Chappel - Year 1 teacher

The money raised will help the WWF to protect the habitats of the bears, enabling them to remain in the wild. Did you know that for brown bears they now can only inhabit 2% of what used to be their habitat? Without this support the numbers of these beautiful animals left in the wild will never recover.
