Y6 Graffiti Art

Our Y6 pupils have enjoyed a very creative and colourful topic based around Graffiti Art. First they had the experience of touring some famous spots in London - like the South Bank - identifying graffiti art techniques, images and styles. Then they cam back to school to learn more about the art form.

Of course graffiti can be quite controversial. Many people would argue that it blights the urban landscape and ruins private property. On the other hand it could be said that the art work improves dull, grey spaces and allows young people to express themselves. Y6 spent time in their literacy lessons exploring both sides of the argument before writing their own piece on the debate.

FOR:

  1. Graffiti art can attract visitors and tourists from around the world
  2. It is a clear way for young people to communicate their feelings and ideas
  3. The humour and thought in some of the art work creates debate
  4. Many places look better for the artwork than they looked before
  5. It is a 'green' form of art as you can keep reusing the space
AGAINST:
  1. Wastes money having to clear it up
  2. Affects private owners whose property has been vandalised
  3. The spray cans are dangerous and can lead to solvent abuse
  4. Often has inappropriate content for young children to see
  5. Not up to the street artists to just decide they want to redecorate an area/wall
Of course the best bit was having the chance to create their own artwork. Without a doubt it is one of the most eye catching displays we have had this year!

I really enjoyed this project. I didn't realise it would involve a trip to London, art lessons and some fun arguments. I did think that graffiti was wrong, but in the right place the art work is amazing!
