Get Caught Reading: Send in your entries now!

#getcaughtreading #AmReading #BookLovers #Books #BookPhotography #IReadEverywhere #BookWorld  #globaled #engchat

Each summer Mrs Mcfarlane runs the reading competition where you have to get caught with a book in an unusual place. We've seen children reading in: airports, on sun loungers, in trampoline enclosures, on the beach and by a palace! All you need to do is snap a photo of your child reading their book and message it to us via the school Facebook page, or email it to office@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Mrs Mcfarlane will judge the winning entries on the return in September, with the best photos earning a prize and certificate… so get reading!

Get Caught Reading
Why have a reading competition?
At Broadford we believe in developing a culture where children are intrinsically motivated to read for pleasure. We believe in encouraging them to read both inside and beyond school. We believe that the most effective way to promote reading is to work in partnership with parents and families.

How does it work?
During the holidays, parents and family look out for chances to 'catch their child reading'. This can be a book or any other reading material: timetables, recipes, instructions. The images can then be shared via our social media platforms to celebrate the reading being done and promote the competition to other families. Look out for photos from staff, who also take part in the promotion!

What is done with the images?

Our librarian adds the images to the Get Caught Reading Map. We plot the distance from where the image was taken to the school - so that we can see if it is possible to beat the previous year's reading mileage. All the images are posted on our blog and entered into the competition. At the end of the holiday, the most unique and interesting photo wins a prize!

Weekly Newsletter - Friday 19th July, 2019

Headteacher: Mrs L Nicholls

Dear Parents and Carers,

End of the Academic Year
It is always a bitter-sweet moment writing the last newsletter of the term; whilst we all need a break - students and staff - the realisation sets in that another year is coming to an end. By the end of today the school will have an empty lifeless feel. There will be staff in school over the next few weeks, especially contractors and site team, but not the pupils full of their energy, excitement and thirst for learning that they bring.
The end of term is always busy with sporting events, trips, celebrations and awards which means that school days are less than ‘normal’ for pupils. However, all of these enrichment activities are central to our ethos at Broadford. When Ofsted visited in October they could clearly see this and commented in our report that ‘Pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities in the curriculum to broaden their cultural horizons and become more familiar with British institutions.’ We are proud of this distinguishing feature that sets us apart from other schools.
In the first newsletter of this academic year I wrote about the challenging time that we had been through during the summer of 2018. We have continued to be tested throughout this year. But I am thrilled to say that as a school community I believe that we have come through these times and we have reached the other side. We are immensely proud of our year 6 pupils, they have demonstrated to everyone that pupils at Broadford pupils make great progress and achieve very well. We have pupils in year 6 that have received full marks in ALL of their SATs tests this year. We have pupils in year 6 who have scored full marks in their spelling tests every week for 3 years. This is achieved through sheer hard work and determination. However, it is not always about academia. Our year 6 pupils have demonstrated kindness, resilience, sportsmanship and reciprocity and these are life skills which are the foundation for successful and fulfilling adult lives.
We are looking towards and looking forward to the next academic year when we get to fully enjoy all of the benefits of our new build and new grounds. We have waited long enough for it, some of us thought that it was never going to happen! We will have an opening celebration in the autumn term when parents and carers can come inside and have a look at our wonderful new facilities.
Thank you all, as always, for your constant support and co-operation. I wish you and your families a summer break filled with enough happiness, laughter to create great memories together.

Attendance and House Points
Congratulations to Chestnut class who won the summer term attendance league and have enjoyed their reward at Jump Evolution. Well done to the pupils in Chestnut for remembering their number 1 job of coming to school everyday on time.
I am thrilled to announce that Cricklade Green House are the summer term house point winners for doing their best in school and for being kind and polite to everyone they meet. They have enjoyed extra trail time and delicious ice-lollies.
We are very proud of you all.

Return to School: Thursday 5th September
Year 1 - Year 6 pupils are expected back at school for 8.30am on Thursday 5th September. Breakfast Club will be open as usual that day from 7.45am

Good Bye
This week we are saying farewell to several of our teachers who are moving onto new opportunities in September. Miss Daly, Mr Nicol, Miss Hammond, Miss Powderly and Mr Jackson - together they have contributed over 10 years of teaching to Broadford Primary. On your behalf we would like to wish them all the best for their new roles and thank them for the positive impact they have had on our pupils and families.

Congratulations
Please join me in sending Mrs Cocks and Miss Jarvis best wishes as they start their maternity leave and prepare for their new arrivals. We are all looking forward to meeting their bundles of joy. Best wishes from us all.

All that leaves me to do is to wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer break. For those of you moving on to secondary school we will miss you but we know you are well prepared for the challenges you will face and you go with our very best wishes for the future. If you are travelling, then I wish you a safe journey and we look forward to seeing you rested and refreshed for the start of the new school year on September 5th.

Kind regards,

Mrs L Nicholls

Cancer Research Race for Life - TODAY!

Our chosen charity for the summer term is Cancer Research UK. This organisation is the world’s largest charity dedicated to saving lives through research. The vision of Cancer Research UK is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Our youngsters are the generation that could see ground-breaking treatments and cures for cancer in their lifetimes. They are the rising stars who could be the researchers and lifesavers of tomorrow. By taking part in Race for Life and uniting together against cancer, they’ll be doing something really special.

We will be racing for life TODAY. Throughout the day children complete the 1 - 1.5km course on the school field with their classmates and collect sponsorship money for their efforts. Please send any sponsorship money into school today in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class.

Pupils should arrive at school at the usual time wearing their PE kits so that they are ready to go. As it has been very warm weather this week it would be a great idea for the pupils to bring in hats and have applied sunscreen before they come to school. We will make sure that their water bottles are full up in school so that they can have lots of water after racing.

I have no doubt that this is going to be an enjoyable event for all and together we’ll be an unstoppable force against cancer.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

4 days to go till our pupils Race for Life!

Our chosen charity for the summer term is Cancer Research UK. This organisation is the world’s largest charity dedicated to saving lives through research. The vision of Cancer Research UK is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

At Broadford Primary we are  holding our very own race for Life event for Cancer Research and we would love all pupils to join in the fun.

Our youngsters are the generation that could see ground-breaking treatments and cures for cancer in their lifetimes. They are the rising stars who could be the researchers and lifesavers of tomorrow. By taking part in Race for Life and uniting together against cancer, they’ll be doing something really special.

Cancer Research UK receives no government funding for their research, so the more of us who join the fight against cancer, the more money we can raise to beat cancer sooner.

We will be racing for life on Thursday 18th July. Throughout the day children complete the 1 - 1.5km course on the school with their classmates and collect sponsorship money for their efforts. Please send any sponsorship money into school on the day in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class.

We look forward to seeing you there.
