Queen Visits Drapers Academy
The local headteachers had a special treat on Friday, when we were all invited to meet the Queen. At first we thought it just involved lunch. However we were then told that all of us would be introduced to Her Majesty! After her tour of the school, the Queen came into the staff room and met with Governors, local Councillors, the headteachers and contractors (who had built the new school).
Although it was difficult to take photos, we managed to get some behind the scenes video footage which you can see below.
The Queen officially opened Drapers Academy - unveiling the foundation stone at the end of her visit. She toured the £250 million site of the Drapers Academy, which staff and students moved into last month. Year 10 students showed the Queen their science projects and the arts department also performed a scene from The Little Shop of Horrors.
At lunchtime the royal visitor and special visitors were served a sumptuous meal in the school canteen, which had been transformed specially with linen tablecloths and flowers. Amazingly the food was cooked by our very own Mr Borrell!
The diners enjoyed a starter of ham hock terrine, with baby plum tomato relish and basil dressing, followed by a canon of lamb, Dauphinoise potato, buttered spinach, beetroot puree and pinot noir jus. For dessert roasted rhubarb and ginger creme brulee was served up with tuile biscuit. And, for the adults, it was all washed down with wine - Montagny 1er Cru La Grande Roche Latour 2010 and Chateaux Beaumont 2005.
The Queen is Freeman of the Drapers Company, which provided the majority of funds to build the school, together with Queen Mary, University of London.

Draft Vision & Values Statement
Now that we have had input from our pupils, parents, Governors and staff we are able to release the draft Vision & Values statement for our school. Please read it through and then let us know what you think of the statements. We will consult with each group again before finalising the document.
In order for this statement to have impact, every group within the school must feel that they have ownership of it. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. A paper copy will be issued to all parents after the half term break.

Today, David was treated to a reception at the Liberty Centre in Romford. Those children who had won awards for their art work received their certificates in the shopping mall.
Resilient Learners - Pete The Cat
At Broadford we believe that all learners should display four key qualities:
Resilience - never give up and stay positive
Resourcefulness - find innovative ways to solve problems
Reflectiveness - think about their learning and find ways to improve
Reciprocity - work well in partners and groups and communicate effectively
This week we met Pete the Cat. He is a resilient cat. Even when some unfortunate accidents befall his new shoes, Pete just keeps on going. Does he cry... GOODNESS NO!
The children were learning that if lessons or tasks are difficult for them, they have to keep on going, just like Pete. Stay positive and you'll be fine.

Matthew's Animal Menagerie
Matthew has been busily creating a whole host of exotic animals at home for his project. Interested by dangerous creatures he has created an orca, King cobra and a terrifying tarantula. Matthew was full of amazing facts about the creatures he has been researching:
- Cobras are amazing climbers and swimmers
- They will eat other snakes
- Cobras can spit their venom up to 6 feet
We have found that our pupils are great fact hunters. What new facts can you find out today?

Parent View Survey Winners
Parent View Results:
A massive thank you to all those parents who took the time during parents’ evening to complete the online survey. We will only really have to do this once per year. In the end we managed a fantastic 121 responses. This comfortably is the best return rate in the authority… so well done! As promised, there are prizes for those families pulled from the lucky bucket (drum roll please) and the winners of our Tesco vouchers are:
£25 – William Edwards
£10 – Russell Lockhart
£5 – Spencer Griffiths
As we managed to smash the total set by Hilldene (our local rivals) the children all earned themselves an extra playtime. If you would like to look at the results, please go online and search for Broadford Primary on Parent View. The headline results of an overwhelmingly positive survey were:
97% of you would recommend this school to another family
100% of you agree that your child is happy at the school
99% of you stated that you feel your child makes good progress
98% of you said that you felt your child was well taught.
Thank you for this positive feedback. We are determined that this is only the start. We recognize there is still more to do for us to truly be the best school on the hill and we are determined to get to that point as quickly as possible.

100% Bikeability Pass Rate
Congratulations to the eleven pupils who managed to complete their Level 2 Bikeability course this week. Split over two days, the cycling exam contains many elements which help to ensure that our pupils are safer on the roads when riding their bikes.
What does Level 2 contain?
Level 2 Bikeability is the first on road course! Level 2 gives you experience of real traffic conditions so you are able to make journeys to school or the shops .Taught in a group of up to 12 pupils, the program is offered to Year 5&6 pupils. By the end of their two day stint - which was made up of four sessions - the children were able to:

By the end of their two day stint - which was made up of four sessions - the children were able to:
- Start and finish an "on road" journey
- Adopt a safe position on the road,
- Pass side turnings and parked vehicles safely,
- Make U turns safely,
- Negotiate small roundabouts,
- Decide whether a cycle lane will help with your journey,
- Understand the Highway Code
"Until I took the course, I hadn't thought about all the dangers on the road!" Toheeb - Year 5
"Although I used to be worried about taking my bike off the pavement, working with Phil has made me much more confident" James - Year 5
Perhaps the most pleasing thing from the two days, was the acknowledgement we had from the instructors of how much the school has improved in the last 3 years. The Bikeability instructor (Phil Mylrea) said on his feedback form that… “the school has transformed itself over the last 3 years and is now unrecognizable from the school it used to be. Broadford Primary is now one of the best schools that Cycle Training East work with.”
What a great endorsement of our school and your children!

We're In The Paper - Owls Dive Bomb Teacher!
When the owls visited the Early Years, it caused quite a stir. Phil Eckett - from Owl Wise - bought along an Arctic, Egyptian, Tawny and Barn owl to show the children. One of the birds took quite a liking to Mrs Stanley (our Early Years Leader). Make sure you get your copy of the Romford Recorder this week and read all about it in more detail...

After 18 months of considerable change, Broadford Primary is in a strong place to look to the future. Our current crop of Parent Governors have been an invaluable source of support. Bailey The Sharp Shooter
Congratulations to Bailey. At a recent football party, he managed to score the most goals. Bailey takes his football very seriously and was delighted to win his shiny gold medal. Well done Bailey!
More Project Superstars
We have been inundated on a weekly basis with children who have been making some fabulous pieces to supplement their projects. Kirsty - who has been learning about the Arctic - created a beautiful Polar Bear out of cotton wool before pasting him onto a serene starry back drop.
William managed to find an innovative use for as football... as a globe!
While he has been at home for the weekends, David Sangojimni has been learning about the Mars rover expedition. In his own time he has tried to reconstruct the robot explorer using card and tooth picks. Did you know that the Mars Rover has 6 wheels which have a diameter of about 10 inches? A very interesting project David.
Have you ever wondered what lives under the sea? Do you know about the clown fish? Holly could tell us that they grow up to 5 inches long. Apparently their greatest threat comes from humans. Having learnt about many different deep sea creatures, Holly created this amazing 3-D underwater scene.

Kie managed to create an African sunset and Serengeti scene from some egg cartons, discarded toilet rolls and a cardboard box. Inspired by the trip to Colchester Zoo, he wanted to make his own majestic lion. Leo, on the other hand, was rather taken by the elephants. He has been able to regal us with facts: their ears are used to help them cool down, they are the heaviest land mammal their tusks are made of precious ivory. Using silver and blue pipe cleaners he was able to design and build an elephant complete with tusks and trunks. Well done gentlemen!

Learning To Read - Which way is best?
BBC News have featured an article where several experts give their views on the best way to teach and learn the skill of reading. Coming through in all the opinions is the need for the children to experience as many books as early as possible and to have parents who model reading. This can be through providing bed time stories to just letting your children see you reading.

Parents Evening Reminder: Mon 15th & Tues 16th
Parents evening will be taking place on Monday and Tuesday evening. After discussions with parents we have lengthened the time of the consultations to 10mins and split the KS2 teachers apart – they will be in their classrooms. If you have KS1 or EYFS children your consultations will be in the new hall.
On both nights our prefects will be on duty to ensure you know where to go and to encourage you to complete the online Parent View survey. We have had 200 guest accounts created to make this process much easier for you.

Name The Dog Competition Winner
Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund
Last week the children took part in a name the dog competition for the Lennox Children's Cancer Fund. First they had to donate a pound, then they could choose a square on the board. On every square was a name for the cute and cuddly toy dog. When the envelope was opened it revealed the name of: Ellie Cater
WHAT THEY DO…
Since the charity started in 1992, they have gained the experience and knowledge needed to provide the correct support that is so desperately needed during the emotional rollercoaster of childhood cancer. For the families of one in every 600 children, childhood cancer is an inescapable reality and the treatment over the following months only increases stress and anxiety for both the parents and siblings.
Often one or both parents will need to give up employment to care for their sick child. Lennox CCF offer Care Grants to support them during this time, and we do so with the minimum of fuss. Care Grants can be used to cover a wide range of expenses such as utility bills, travel to/from hospital appointments, clothing for weight loss/gain due to treatment or even in some sad case, funeral costs.
Throughout the year, LCCF also offer respite breaks to give families a much deserved break away from doctors, hospitals and treatment. These breaks are an essential resource that gives each family the opportunity to enjoy some quality time together away from their daily routine and coping with such a terrible illness. They are provided free of charge and often with additional spending money!

Thank you for all the donations, which totalled: £51
This money will help LCCF continue their wonderful work.

Apology - Year 3&4 Trip Delay
I would like to apologise unreservedly to all the parents and children who have had to wait for trips to leave this week. On letters sent out by us there were clear statements for departure times – which we did not meet. Your job is to support and defend the interests of your child/children as such I completely accept the point that many of you made to me this morning. However I too have a duty to ensure that all the children in my care get to experience equality of access and provision in their education. I will passionately defend the right and need for all of the children in my care to experience what it is like to go to a zoo, to walk around a historic monument, to challenge themselves on a climbing wall. I will not tell a group of children they are effectively excluded from school trips and I would suspect that those of you who turned up on time would be uncomfortable at thinking your child’s school excluded groups of children from these days out.
In future we can certainly improve on communication. You should have been informed of the delay while standing outside. In future we can make provision for you to come and wait inside the building if the trip departure is going to be significantly delayed. Curriculum enrichment is incredibly important and we will continue to run these trips. The vast majority of parents will be on time, some will be late. We will continue to do all we can to ensure that everyone goes as the pupils – not the parents – are our first concern.

Boys Football: Broadford 3 v Mead 2
A strong start to the match saw Ife, after only the first five minutes, chip the ball over the keepers head to put Broadford ahead 1-0. Two good saves from Donavan kept Mead at bay, although after 20 mins - against the run of play - Mead managed to level the score 1-1.
A few short passes between Yinka & Ife and acurate strikes on goal from Jordan & Fletcher forced the Mead goalie into some good saves. Tension built just before half time as Broadford were awarded a penalty which Taheeb struck cleanly but unfortunately just skimmed over the bar.
Broadford’s second goal came from a corner that after a strong header by Yinka. Although the initial strike narrowly missed the goal, the ball rebounded off of the post for Taheeb to place in the back of the net 2-1. After an evenly matched 2nd half another fine pass saw Jack run onto the ball to score his 1st goal of the season 3-1 Broadford.
Strong defensive play by Bailey and a great effort from Donavan could not stop Meads 2nd goal which was hit firmly from just outside the area. A well supported match was enjoyed by all & a well deserved win for Broadford!

Owl Wise Visits Broadford Primary
Some special visitors flew into Broadford Primary this week to amaze and enthral the children. In the Nursery and Reception classes they have been reading the classic book 'Owl Babies'. What better way to bring the book to live than to let the children meet some real life owls. Phil Eckett (The Owl Man) bought along his soft feathered friends. Swooping up and down the school hall the graceful, majestic birds delighted the pupils and teachers... even dive bombing Mrs Stanley! First they got to meet Isis - an Aharoni Eagle Owl from Egypt. When she had finished scampering around the floor she gobbled her way through several pieces of chicken - still with the feathers and bones attached. Did you know that, after around seven hours, the owl will then cough up a small pellet to expel the unwanted feathers and bone?
'I loved stroking the owl... it was so soft!' Olivia Wheal - aged 5
The grand finale was the chance to meet to meet Spook, the Snowy Owl. All the birds are cared for by Owl Wise who provide educational talks for children, visit community groups and care for sixk birds. It was a tremendous morning which the children will remember for a long time. Certainly the Owl Babies story is now very real for all the children.

Meet Isabelle's Family!
In Reception the children have been doing projects about their families. We have been very interested to learn about the Aunties, Uncles, dogs and Pop Pops who the children clearly love very much. With every picture board comes an abundance of stories and memories which we have enjoyed sharing. Thank you for the efforts that have been made with these projects. Have a look at Isabelle's family display below. She was able to go into incredible detail about every photograph and we had a great conversation about families.
Harvest Festival Donations - Thank You!
Harvest gifts flooded into school throughout last week for the harvest festival assembly. The children carried bags into school bigger and heavier than them. The office was overflowing with tins of beans, soup and packets of biscuits. We are sure that the Women’s Refuge will be extremely appreciative for all your contributions. If you haven’t donated anything yet, be quick and your gift can be added to the parcel before it is shipped off.
