Cycle To School Awards

At Broadford we believe that our Bike to School Week is an opportunity to celebrate all the fantastic things our pupils have achieved throughout the year to encourage cycling.
The activities for the week were designed to take our pupils on a journey, exploring the benefits of travelling by foot, bike or scooter, understanding how they can make a change and ultimately being inspired to take practical actions.
Day 1 - My journey to school
Pupils considered their journey to school, sketch this out and discuss what they like, dislike or would want to change.
This was taken from our street survey. An exciting activity, it enabled pupils to investigate the area around their school and create a manifesto on how to make their streets safer and greener.
Day 2 - Human map
Pupils learned about mapping, where they live compared to classmates, how far they travel and who they could travel with.
Day 3 - Calories, carbon and calculators
Pupils investigate how their travel choices can affect their health and environment, calculating calories burned and carbon released.
Day 4 - We could be heroes
Pupils were encouraged to think about how they can be role models for active travel and persuade or inspire others, creating posters or writing letters.
Day 5 - Get going
Pupils were able to further develop practical skills and learn how to make cycling and scooting safer. This included videos for simple checks and practices.
At the end of the week we awarded certificates to those pupils who had accumulated the most miles cycling to and from school.
"I enjoyed looking at the local area and identifying all the places I could ride my bike. My dad took me out at the weekend to have a go on the paths."
