Maths Champions

Qualifying Round Result
We are delighted to inform you that our crack team of mathematicians - Lewis Makolli, Plamen Vasilev and Natalie Towner - managed to win their qualifying round of the Count on Us maths contest last week. Pitted against teams from 13 other London Primary schools, our pupils managed to perform well in all three challenges: shape, number and code breaking.

After months of practice they were finally able to lock mathematical horns with their peers. It was their shape knowledge and skill that really set them apart. Despite some very challenging shapes being shown on the board, our terrific threesome were quickly able to make them with the tangram pieces.

The tangrams were really good fun. It is challenging when you see the shadow image on the board, but we have done lots of examples in school so we knew what to do. The other pupils couldn't believe how quick we were.

What Happens Next?
Now the team have one month to practice using the new, harder sets of cards so they are prepared for the final on June 8th. If they win that final part of the competition, they are likely to be whisked away to Tower 42 for lunch!

It was really nervewracking having to play against so many other schools. We did have some practice in school - but there were only 3 other teams. However after the first round it became much easier.

What is the Count on Us Challenge 2016?
This pan-London maths tournament is open to pupils in Year 4 and 5 and is based on shape puzzles, number games using the 24® Game and code breaking challenges.

Our pupils have used the games and activities to build their confidence in arithmetic and problem solving skills whilst enjoying playing the games and activities.

Following some tough internal competitions, we selected a team of three pupils to represent our school at the heats, and if they are successful, the Grand Final for the top London schools!

Numeracy is a key area that my team wants to help tackle in schools. London schools are doing well but can do even better, and I applaud the Mayor’s Fund for London in its efforts to help thousands more young Londoners develop an ability that will be vital for their future employability.
Boris Johnson - Mayor of London
