Fact Hunters: Parrot fish, sharks and lizards

Did you know that a star fish has got eyes! They are eye spots located on the end of its tentacles. They can’t see well but can sense light and dark.

Did you know that apples are a much more popular fruit in the UK than in Australia? Here 60% of Britons regularly eat apples whereas in Australia it is only 20%.

Did you know that Parrot Fish wear pajamas? Every night, certain species of parrot fish envelope themselves in a transparent cocoon made of mucous secreted from an organ on their head. Scientists think the cocoon masks their scent, making them harder for nocturnal predators, like moray eels, to find.

Did you know that sharks have four different types of teeth.

- long, narrow, needle-like teeth ideal for gripping something as slippery and streamlined as a fish.

- thick, plate-like teeth perfect for crushing the shells of their prey.

- sharp, serrated cutting teeth for tearing off chunks of flesh.

- Teeth that act as filters to get plankton from water.

Although horned rattlesnakes burrow down in the sand, they can still see. The horns help to protect their eyes from the sand and the sun.

Did you know that some lizards like to eat ants that can sting you? In order to protect themselves they have developed a thick skin that can’t be penetrated.
