Vision & Values
Parents were reminded that the new website:
www.broadford.havering.sch.uk
has the Vision & Values clearly published on it. The children have three key jobs to do:
- Turn up every day on time
- Do their best in every lesson
- Be kind and polite to everyone they meet
Update on staffing
Mrs Verity Hoffman introduced herself and spoke about her core responsibilities:
- Assistant Headteacher
- Lead person for Child Protection and Safeguarding
- Responsible for Special Educational Needs
- Line manager for the Teaching Assistants
Broadford is fully staffed for September. We are continuing our extra support in Key Stage 2 by providing four teachers in Year 5&6 for three classes. Like wise there will be five teachers in Year 1&2 where there are just four classes.
We have also appointed an additional SEN assistant in KS1 & EYFS – which allows for the running of a Nuture Group, lunch time club and additional Speech & Language provision.
We are also delighted to announce that we have a new sports coach Dean Clark & specialist PE teacher Joanne Cook from September. This will allow us to deliver high quality PE lessons for all pupils.
Update on pupil numbers & Attendance
Overall attendance is running at over 95.62% - a significant improvement on last year and persistent absence is down. Thank you to all our parents and carers who help to get the children here in the morning.
Only Year 1 & Year 2 are below the 95% target, but Year 6 are at 96.8%
Total pupil roll up to 369 – increase of another 10 children from last meeting
Attendance Bouncy Castles are booked for the 12th July – all children to get a free ice cream and spell on the castles. 95%+ attendance children will get an extra session as a reward.
Build update & Expansion
The infill classroom on track to be completed for mid-August
We have a role play hobbit house on order for KS1 which will be installed later this half term - four weeks from this week until it is installed.
Two classrooms have been agreed for back of Junior build. They are likely to be started in March of next year so that our school can be expanded to 2 forms of entry from September 2014
Local Authority required 12 extra classes for this September but 17 are now needed. This means it is likely that there will be a need to expand Broadford further in the next two years. The current position is that the local authority feel that the best course of action is to refurbish the old building. We disagree with them for the following reasons:
steven.kelly@havering.gov.uk or call 01708 432027
paul.rochford@havering.gov.uk or call 01708 432037
pat.murray@havering.gov.uk or call 01708 432027
If you contact the councillors via email, please CC in the school so that we have a record of conversations: office@broadford.havering.sch.uk
Phonics Screening
This will take place for Year 1 pupils next week. It is a short test of 40 words very much like the Read Write Inc assessments the pupils have been having every 6 weeks. It tests their knowledge of different Phonics: set 1, set 2 and set 3 sounds
If the children don’t get required mark of 32/40 then they re-sit in Year 2
The test is simply used for teachers to identify children who need additional support and show impact of phonics teaching resources. If you have any questions please fix an appointment to see Mrs Nicholls who will be administering the assessment.
School Fete
The Friends of Broadford are well underway with their preparations for this year's Summer Fete. To help them put on a fantastic show, they have some requests of our school community:
• Are you able to help on the day - run a stall, act as a marshall, help serve drinks, be available to set up/pack away?
• Would you like to buy a pitch for a stall or do you know a stall holder who would?
If you can answer yes to any of the above questions, please contact Mark Borrell at: fobroadford@gmail.com or leave a message for him with Mrs Taylor on the front desk.
The Romford Recorder have been invited to attend as has the new Mayor
There will be a wrist band system to help families and give unlimited access to squash drinks
Forthcoming visits and enrichment
Year 5&6 – Globe Theatre & Stubbers
Year 3&4 – Animal man, Hanningfield Reservoir, Transport Museum and Central Park
Year 1&2 – Library, Freshwater theatre
EYFS – South Weald Park
Book Club update:
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory will be the visit for Year 3&4 next week. This project has been very successful at raising the profile of reading, extending the children's cultural experiences and targeting pupils who need extending with their literacy.

- Issue of asbestos to contend with – complicates any refit and would probably have to be removed anyway
- Likelihood that it would not be at the same spec as the rest of the build
- Classrooms are on the wrong side of the building and do not open out onto the field for outdoor learning
