More Able Science - Chromatography

Our More Able pupils recently enjoyed a science based workshop focusing on Chromatography. This is a word derived from the Greek chroma "color" and graphein "to write"

In this workshop the children experimented with paints that then changed colour when they were heated. Thermochromism is the property of substances to change color due to a change in temperature. The children learnt that thermochromism has practical uses, e.g. in baby bottles (changes to a different color when cool enough to drink) or kettles (changes when water is at or near boiling point).
