The Broadford Book Club were delighted to have the chance to go and see the live stage version of Gangsta Granny having studied the book for the last 8 weeks.
In their Book Club sessions with Mrs McFarlane (formerly Miss Sparkes - librarian) the pupils have learnt more about the characters, examined the plot, explored the wider issues in the story and compared it to other books that they know well.
Although it is a funny story, the ending is very sad. We discussed how we would feel if our Granny was unwell and how we would cope. The play was amazing and I really cried when Granny died.
Lillie Mersh - aged 9
My favourite part was when they meet the Queen. I thought they might get their heads chopped off for trying to steal the Crown Jewels... but she was really kind.

The Broadford Book Club inspires children to read beyond the book, and understand some of the other messages that are in the story. It has also proved to be a great way to encourage the pupils to widen their reading.
The feedback from the sessions is always very positive. Grandparents are a very important part of a child's life and it is very interesting to look at how they are represented in different stories.
