Our Y3 Scientists had a fantastic lesson exploring the engine designed by the engineer Hero:
Who was Hero?
Hero of Alexandria was a mathematician and engineer who was active in his native city of Alexandria, Roman Egypt. He is considered one of the world's greatest experimenters.
Hero published a well recognized description of a steam-powered device sometimes called a "Hero engine.

We learnt that it is the steam pushing against the bends in the metal pipe that make the engine turn. This has been used to help build turbines that generate electricity!

Pupils also got to witness an experiment that demonstrates the impact of air pressure - the exploding can. Have a look for yourself below.
100% of our pupils agree that since starting the Empiribox science scheme they are more excited about Science. 100% agree that the lessons are now more practical and 100% agree strongly that they have had WOW moments during the investigations or demonstrations.
Who knows... maybe the next great experimenter will come from Harold Hill rather than Alexandria.
