Poetry - First Day @ School

Well done to our first group of Y4 pupils who gave a great performance at the Poetry Festival. In front of a large audience, they spoke confidently and used plenty of expression. Our facilitators - Gill & Bill of the Multistory Theatre Company - were very impressed at the way the pupils added their own interpretation to the poems.

I loved the poem. It was very funny. My first day at school was a very long time ago, but i'm glad I didn't think that the fences were to stop bears and tigers from eating the children. I would have been too scared to go in.

We believe that poetry can be an excellent way to experience challenging ideas and vocabulary. During the week pupils had great discussions about words and concepts which really stood out to them: loomed, gushing, eclipse and freedom. Our More Able performers who came back for the festival finale read poems from Poet Laureates old and new: Carol Ann Duffy & Sir Alfred Tennyson.
