Fact Hunters: Coral reefs, dinosaurs & sneezes

Lewis Makolli
Did you know that there are 196 countries in the world? Russia is the largest, while the Vatican City is the smallest.

Luis Bone
Did you know it is impossible to sneeze when you are asleep? When we’re awake, particles, allergies or an illness can stimulate the nerve cells in the nose. The nerves then send signals to the brain in order to initiate a sneeze to get rid of whatever is irritating it. But during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, certain neurotransmitters shut down- this state is known as REM atonia. This means that the motor neurons are not being stimulated, so they aren’t sending these signals to the brain.

Lucian Bundy
Triceratops, with its three horns and bony frill around the back of its head, is one of the more recognizable dinosaurs. Its name is a combination of Greek syllables tri-, meaning "three," kéras, meaning "horn," and ops, meaning "face."

Brandon Bundy
Did you know that coral reefs begin to form when free-swimming coral larvae attach to submerged rocks or other hard surfaces along the edges of islands or continents. As the corals grow and expand, reefs take on one of three major characteristic structures —fringing, barrier or atoll

http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/corals/coral04_reefs.html

Jacob Owsley
Amazingly polar bears can grow to a huge size. Their head and body can be up to 2.2 - 2.5 m; while they can weigh up to1,600 lbs.

Ellis Curtis Rich
There is a rather strange creature called a Naked Mole Rat. Naked mole rats are rodents, but they live in communities like those of many insects. Several dozen rats live together in colonies led by one dominant rat—the queen. As in some insect species, the queen is the only naked mole rat female to breed and bear young.

Housepoints:

Red – Faringdon 72

Blue – Chatteris 72

Yellow – Dulverton 50

Green – Cricklade 57

Orange – Dudley 15

Unusually we have a tie this week between Red & Blue. Congratulations to both Houses. Keep tucking in those shirts, walking in the corridors, opening doors, saying please and thank you, being kind to others and having a positive attitude. The cakes and drinks prize is just four short weeks away!

Update to medical records:

Mrs Hoffman has now completed the medical records update based on the information that we know about your children. If there is any change to your child’s medical condition, if your child is diagnosed with a condition or allergy we need to know immediately so that we don’t place your child in a harmful situation. An example is a child who is diagnosed with a food allergy.

If we are unaware, the kitchen and teachers can’t take any precautions. In the advent of any changes, please inform Mrs Taylor in the school office, or use the Year group email box.

Attendance:

KS1: Cedar 99.29%
KS2: Birch 97.59%
Overall: 94.31%

Congratulations to Year 2 who are blazing a trail with their attendance. Cedar have finished top again with an almost perfect score. That means they also lead the overall competition with a whopping 72 points. Can anyone catch them? Sadly it is unlikely to be our upper KS2 classes who are languishing at the bottom of the table.

The overall attendance is not much better at 94.31%. We can do better than this… there are just four weeks left to improve before!

Email Version of Newsletter:

Some of our parents have been asking if it would be possible to have a copy of the weekly newsletter emailed to them. We can provide this for you. Please make sure that you use the account which you would like to receive the newsletter to email the office@broadford.havering.sch.uk account. Just state ‘Weekly Newsletter Request’ in the subject line and we will add you to the mailing list.

We look forward to welcoming the parents of Cherry to their sharing assembly on Wednesday 27th November @ 9.05am

Movie Star Themed Lunch

Mandy served up another great themed lunch - this time based on famous movie stars. See if you can guess the characters that they dressed up as!

Once again, the pupils were very keen to buy their dinner tickets with over 170 dinners being served. However, this total was smashed yesterday. Monday saw 188 dinners provided by Mandy and her team. It means they are getting in plenty of practice, ready for the mass provision of free school meals for infants from next September.

Now we have the Christmas lunches to look forward to!

Cookery & Art Club Creations

It was a busy night on Monday for the art club. Under the guidance of Mrs Chilvers, the children started their Christmas card designs. Armed with felt tips, glitter and glue sticks, the children made some great creations. Just look at their faces to see the intense concentration!

Meanwhile the cookery club were making fresh fruit pavlovas. Light, fluffy meringue bases topped with whipped cream, grapes, strawberries and kiwi fruit… delicious! Chopping, slicing, whisking the children made it all look very easy. After they had finished, there was a long line of staff desperate to try one of their desserts. Good job everyone!

Kynan Completes His Chart!

Kynan has been working very hard this term to develop his behaviour for learning. He has shown both Miss Cook and Mrs Nicholls that he is thinking carefully about all the aspects that come with being an effective learner. Kynan has improved his punctuality, his spelling book is bought in each week and in class he is able to concentrate on the task and manage distractions effectively.

Well done Kynan, we are proud of you!

Bronze & Silver Tracker Awards:

Jackie Ramalingham, Leo Mbata, Micayla Smith, Jude Gore, Samantha Simpson, George Arnold and Keeley King have earned their Silver pencil.

Meanwhile, Bailey Westfall and Daria Bekisz, Lucy Stevens and Ruby Burchell have also collected enough merits to finish their Golden tracker.

The FoB would also be very grateful for any volunteers who could help to run the event and support on the day. Again, please use the details above to get in touch with the team directly. We are very much looking forward to this event and hope to see as many parents, pupils and families there as possible.

Sustainable Travel Award: Bronze

We have seen a real improvement in the number of pupils choosing to cycle to school. Our JRSOs have also reported a higher number of children completing their Walking Passports in order to claim their badges. Well done to all those parents and pupils who manage to walk to school. You benefit from the exercise and we benefit from the lower levels of congestion, parking and pollution!

Kie's Swimming Award

Well done to Kie who has been swimming like a fish. Last week he managed to complete his 20m badge! Kie was very keen to tell us how he has been working on his technique and working hard to improve his stamina. Obviously the hard work is paying off.

Sporting Success:

We have been delighted to win our first matches of the season in both football and netball. The success continued this week with a 10-0 victory over St Ursula’s Junior with our High Five netball team. Our footballers also won their recent match against Hilldene 2-1, despite the absence of several Year 6 players. A great start to the season!

We have a particular mention for Alex Wicher – who has earned a Sporting Achievement award. His great display of team work and sportsmanship was a delight to behold. Well done Alex!

Fact Hunters: Ducks, frogs & lobsters

Georgia Brooks
Georgia has discovered an interesting fact/myth about whether a duck’s quack does or doesn’t echo. Scientists have even researched the myth to prove it isn’t true! Find out more here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3086890.stm

Bradley Joy
Watch out for colourful frogs! Their elaborate designs and hues are deliberately ostentatious to ward off potential predators, a tactic called aposematic coloration. Dendrobatids include some of the most toxic animals on Earth. The two-inch-long (five-centimeter-long) golden poison dart frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown men.

Skye Griffiths
Did you know that lobsters are ten-legged crustaceans closely related to shrimp and crabs? They have poor eyesight but highly developed senses of taste and smell.

Ben Green
Construction of the Colosseum was begun under the emperor Vespasian in 70 AD. It is estimated it could hold, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests animal hunts & executions

We’re In The Paper:

Make sure you get your copy of the Romford Recorder this week. Last week we had a visit from PC Hopkins – who gave a talk to the children on how to become a police officer. Did you know that there are 32,000 police officers in London alone?

This year we have been pursuing a new project to help bring learning to life for our children. When speaking to them it is clear they have a wide range of career aspirations. But many of them don’t know how to get those jobs, what qualifications they need and why their English and Maths skills are essential. Equally there are jobs out there they could do, but they don’t know they exist.

Miss Morris has been organizing trips and visits from different careers to help inspire the children and help them see the wider purpose in the learning they do at school. The feedback from the children has been extremely positive and we are looking forward to further visits over the next two terms.

Listen to what the children had to say after PC Hopkins visit...

Willow's Sharing Assembly: Picasso Inspired Pictures

Willow Class gave a great recount of all the topics they have been learning about this term. We heard evacuee diaries, learnt about famous paintings and how the class have been rapping about healthy eating.

The most striking piece of work came in the form of their Guernica inspired art. Well done Willow class!
