Learning Outside: Experimenting With Forces

The children in KS1 have been busy studying forces in science lessons and this week Pine class have been investigating the force of the wind.  Fortunately, the lovely weather this week has allowed us to have some great fun using the outdoor areas to support our learning! Armed with only plastic bags, string, lollypop sticks and ribbon the children set to work making kites and streamers and after tying some tricky knots we were soon ready to experiment.  Through their experiments the children were able to see natural forces at work, they could then explain why their bubbles went in the same direction, how the kites were able to fly and, through running with a sheet of cardboard attached to them, how air resistance affects objects. Here are some of the photos of our work;

First we had to tie the string to our bags!

We made streamers using ribbon and lolly pop sticks.

Using only straws we had to move the football to the goal, there was some good use of tallying to keep a track of the scores!
